What's the difference between Modern and Contemporary architecture? I know the 2 aren't synonymous ..but what's the main difference? Time period? Style? Materials? Some links to picture examples would be nice. I'm not an architectural student ..just wondering.
What are the most useful and exciting contemporary architecture theories? Many architects and academics tend to cloud their ideas with lingo like "archademics", "verticalization", etc. Gone are the days when architects like Le Corbusier expressed themselves clearly and precisely, unafraid of criticism by letting people understand what they are doing. When architects do explain their works clearly, they disappoint most times, gravitating towards personal explorations that tend to do little to improve the lives of most people. What are the most useful and exciting theories that drive the best architects these days then, if any?

Would a house that is mainly modern and contemporary in architecture work with a decor that is either? ...that is either mostly elcectic or entirely vintage-inspired? I'm just curious because anytime I see a contemporary room I see mostly contemporary decor to go with it. I'm not into contemporary decor, however, I love really antique, vintage decor - but from different eras. I'm not sure why. I've always loved the clean lines of an extremely modern looking home, but contemporary furniture always comes off as really uncomfortable and cold. Thanks to anyone that responds :) I promise to pick a best answer No no, I loved your rambling! Lol that was great! I think that gives me a better idea of what I would want to go for...

Art Institute of Chicago or the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago? I'm going to be visiting Chicago for a day and would like to go to an art museum. But I don't know much about either. I'll be up there in May. As far as my preferences in Art, I like it all. I like a lot of traditional art and contemporary art (besides most of the my third grader could do that modern art). I'm going to school for architecture and minoring in Art History so I'd like to get the most out of this trip I could. Which Museum would you recommend? The Art Institute of Chicago, or the Museum of Contemporary Art? Thanks!
Does anyone still apreciate historical/ancient architecture? I have always loved architecture, specifically old and historical buildings/palaces/churches/homes. Sure, the contemporary homes are nice, but its not what I'd prefer. I want to be an architect. I was wondering if others appreciate historical monuments/architecture as much as I do? I recently learned that aparantly London will be tearing down some of its historical buildings to build more modern/contemporary buildings. I was shocked, London is such a beautiful city I cant stand to see its old charm dissapear.

Landscape Architecture Works in Japan? I am in Japan for a few weeks. I used to live here so I have seen the Kyoto gardens and the usual Japanese garden stuff. However, I am now a student in landscape architecture and I would like to explore more of the contemporary/recent designs here in Japan. Does anyone know of any designed specifically by lanscape architects or land artists in the Tokyo, Saitama, or Kyushu areas?
Is architecture, as an art of dream and imagination, dead in the public sphere and beyond? Standing in the concourse of grand central makes me proud to be human, it reminds me of the ingenuity, imagination and perseverance of the human spirit. But, It seems every new public building (and private ones to a certain extent as well, ie strip malls, department stores) is utilitarian, soulless, and bland. Lit by row after row of cold fluorescent lighting. Is architecture dead in the public sphere? If not, what are some examples of contemporary public architecture that matches the imagination and scale of Grand Central? What about private architecture. It seems the most "scenic" towns and cities are always ones with a past, with old architecture that has been well preserved. What the heck happened to imagination and excess, for no other reason than as a physical manifestation fo the human spirit, in architecture?
What places would you recommend for an artist traveling to Bangkok and Samui who..? ...wants to see art (traditional and contemporary), traditional architecture, and good scenery for painting? Also any advice about rip-offs, danger, etc. to avoid? Thanks.

The Tower of Babel, and God's insecurity issues? In the story of the Tower of Babel, God gets all bent out of shape because the people of the world have peacefully united and are beginning to construct a massive tower that will reach to the heavens in monument. God promptly strikes them down and confuses their language (this is supposed to be the story of why everyone doesn't speak the same language) for getting so uppity, and also has the uncomfortable implication that, at the time, it was literally believed that heaven was in the clouds. The thing is, now, we not only have skyscrapers far beyond the height that any contemporary architecture would have allowed, but we routinely fly through the stratosphere, less routinely work in high orbit, and have landed on the moon multiple times. Has God changed his mind about the "no humans above x feet in altitude" thing? Has he gotten over his neuroticism over having his superiority threatened? What gives?
Architecture in Ireland? What are some great historical buildings in Ireland? I'm writing a contemporary paper on a piece of architecture; I really would love to do it on a building in Ireland, but I don't know of that many.

Ancient Greece in popular culture and in our modern world? Could you give me examples of contemporary art, architecture and literature and even films that are influenced by the ancient Greek civilization?
What are four good examples of buildings that would help in choosing a deisgn for a museum? You are a member of and advisory board who answers to a public figure; someone who is in control of, and makes decisions concerning the architectural development of the city where you reside. It has been established that there is a need for a new museum to house the historic art and artifacts of the city and surrounding region. You have been given the responsibility to begin the search for the appropriate architect as well as inform the said public figure of the reasons why a particular architect/architecture is suitable for the charge of the museum. Your research begins with understanding historical models for museums and similar institutions. In your paper you must select four examples that programmatically fit your idea of “museum” and explain why you have chosen these buildings (note that the chosen buildings do not necessarily need to be museums). You must then present your findings to the board for review. It is your responsibility to explain why these models are good precedents, and then you must explain why, even though these where suitable at the time, they may not be suitable now. Also, you must reference four contemporary museums that you feel are appropriate in order to foster a connective historical understanding of your choices to your audience: the board. Essentially, you will be selecting buildings that can perform as a museum “type.” You will explain the positive, and potentially negative, attributes of the building as an historic model. The selection of the contemporary – modern – buildings is to reinforce both positive and negative elements. Remember, in the end, you are not selecting a “building.” You are educating a group of people in order for them to make the appropriate decisions on hiring an architect. You will not suggest an architect. The ideas in your paper are general. You should use thoughts discussed in the lectures as well as your individual research. Remember that notions of program, formal design, materials, structure and contemporary ideas are all constituents that should be used in your paper. Any suggestions?
Architecture job in Vancouver BC? I am hoping to land a job in Vancouver. Does anyone know a good website that i can find job listings, or at very least know any hip contemporary designers doing good work in Vancouver?
In your opinion, what country has the most interesting architecture? and can you name actual buildings you have in mind... or link to pictures..? I am not thinking about sites such as the Great Wall, Persepolis, etc., rather, structures built in contemporary times...
architecture and acting? I am currently in second year of architecture school I am 18 and still have 4 more years to go. My sole dream is to become an actress. But I live in a small country. I started my college in marketing but hated it and switched to architecture which was something I had aspired to be since I was little. I had never known it was going to be such hard work. However I like it. It is definitely a beautiful career, and I don't really care when people day you don;t make much money at it. My biggest set back is that I want to be an actress, I have been doing theater since I was in school. Last year I enrolled in a publicity agency and did and national play in june. This year I enrolled in the national school of performing arts to get a degree in acting and getting ballet and contemporary dance classes on fridays there.. I am also getting a violin title at the National Music school and I've been practicing tae kwon do for the last 5 months and have already advanced a level. You might tell I have a pretty tight schedule. I don't mind because I am never bored. And I have organized my self and somehow manage to even go out with my friends and family. But I find myself thinking every so often that I should have stayed in Marketing because I would have been finishing college in 2 years instead of in 4 now that I am in architecture. And I would be living a more relaxed life. Or I think I should have or should switch to publicity and communications instead or architecture. It is horrible to be in this dilema. I would love to know what you think. I plan to go 1000% towards acting after I graduate college. I had planned that if acting doesn't work out with my architecture degree I would work in set design and become a production designer. Do you think my dreams are too unreachable? I was also seeing to apply to an acting college I saw NIDA in australia and I plan on giving it a shot and applying. If I don't get in then I continue in college and keep trying for the years to come. Or do you think I should stick to waiting till I graduate and I'm 22 or is that age too old? I never plan on quitting on acting; I don't see it as that I want to become famous. I would love to keep on working in theater and do independent films, films in spain, france and Asia. I speak fluent english, spanish, french and I am learning korean. Obviously I would love to work in big feature films in LA or NY or Chicago. Please give me your take on things. I just sometimes feel like architecture might get a toll on me and that scares me. I don't want to have to stop acting because of college. I don't think I would I want it too much. Acting makes me feel like nothing else. That is why sometimes I think that had I kept going in marketing I would begun my acting career earlier. Or if i had studied communications then It would be closer related to acting and stuff. Please help I am sorry I wrote so much I just really want to know what others think.
Contemporary Design- the right phrase? I'm writing a research project including the use of architecture in university buildings, and I'm stuck on what to call my subjects. 1) Is Contemporary Interior design the right way to describe a brightly coloured room with bright furniture, and really modern design? Or is there a better phrase used by designers? 2) Old architecture of no specific era (but generally classed as 'old', eg. moulding, archways, pre-war etc) : I have no idea what to collectively call this, I'm just going with 'old buildings'! Is there a good word to describe it? 3) A combination of the two, eg. steel beams with attached lighting included in a photo of ornate mouldings- I've noticed that they are deliberately placed together, but I can't think of a nice phrase to sum that up. Any ideas? If you can help me with any of the questions I'll love you forever :)
Unique question about Brooklyn: What are some "non-tourist" things a tourist could do? Here's what I mean: I want the only noticeable thing about me to be my slight Kentucky accent. I don't want to straggle along the sidewalk, taking pictures of everything I see and looking at my map every 10 feet. In other words, I want to get a true feel of Brooklyn and its architecture, neighborhoods, attitudes, cuisine, cultures, etc. Where are some cheap but cool art museums (can be traditional, European, contemporary, neighborhood art, anything)? How about live music joints (for any genre)? Other nightlife? Laid-back restaurants and cafes? Anything else you want to chime in? I want the best memories of Brooklyn to be the ones I can remember fondly, not take pictures of. Thank you!

I've got a question about Architecture? I live in the Buffalo-Niagara region of western New York State. I'm not an expert on architecture but it has always been an interest of mine. This area is an architectural hot spot with everything from Gothic and Art-Deco to Googie and modern contemporary. But I've noticed that most of the really old houses built with in the city of Buffalo from about the Early 1800's to the early 1900's range in styles of Early Classical Revival, NeoClassical, (There are some Italianate in the south towns) And Victorian. From about 1900 to the 1930s or 40s more houses built were of Craftsman, Prairie, Queen Ann, Stick, Dutch Colonial, and Bungalows. More of the Many modern homes being built or built from the 50's and so on seem to be a combination style of Bungalows, Craftsmen and Queen Ann's. Much of the city how ever has a particular style of Architechture I cannot seem to identify. Here is a photo of a typical house from the area http://images.house.info/c9/c9e5979ab58dfb5acd7763d1ed3663d1.jpg And here are some others for better reference http://remax-north-amherst-ny.com/propertysearch/propertydetail.aspx?MLSNumber=326653&MLSMarketCode=BuffaloNiagaraNY&RecordCount=1 http://remax-north-amherst-ny.com/propertysearch/propertydetail.aspx?MLSNumber=330931&MLSMarketCode=BuffaloNiagaraNY&RecordCount=1 http://remax-north-amherst-ny.com/propertysearch/propertydetail.aspx?MLSNumber=331298&MLSMarketCode=BuffaloNiagaraNY&RecordCount=1 http://remax-north-amherst-ny.com/propertysearch/propertydetail.aspx?MLSNumber=324421&MLSMarketCode=BuffaloNiagaraNY&RecordCount=1 Can anybody help me out with what styles those might be? I'm very curious. Also: I noticed that most of the suburban homes built after WW2 are Cape-Cods.
Real Estate Question about Arizona? My husband and I are in our early 30's and are looking to build a large home (8000 sq. ft) somewhere in Arizona. We would rather the subdivision be on the newer side. We loved master-planned communities too (have restuarants, malls, etc near by). But, we do not like contemporary architecture. Any suggestions? If money were no object, what city and development/subdivision would you build a new home in?
Architectural time line - help? I can't find a good, accessible time line anywhere that will give me architectural dates. I'm writing an essay on contemporary architecture vs traditional architecture and need to know the sort of time frame.

'Attractive' university? What is a university, anywhere in the United States, that has modern, contemporary architecture? I'm looking for one that has a trendier feel to it. Just curious.
Which graduate school is better? IIT or UIC? I am trying to decide which school would be best for me, IIT or UIC. I have a feeling IIT's focus is mainly on modern architecture and high rise design, whereas UIC would be a little more towards contemporary architecture, which I am interested in. However, on the other hand, from my research I understand IIT has a better reputation. Although it does cost a lot more than UIC. I also heard, that after a rough period when UIC was close to losing its accreditation, now with a new chairman the program has improved tremendously. Could someone please give me some advice? I would really appreciate it!

How much US aid is detrimental to a country's dignity? HOw much help is too much help? I love what the US is doing? they are really kind helping others but there is one problem... how much help is too much help? Everytime I return to Jakarta Indonesia for the holidays, all i see is crime wars like the USA, buildings like the USA, and what's worse... a social culture like the USA... Jakarta used to be filled with people who loved their families but the tradition of the Javanese are gone.... It's like modern architecture on traditional architecture... You have a style imposed on others when it does not fit the social context of a different place. I don't want to offend but all i want to see is a fine balance between dignity of traditional values and contemporary views. I think that the US should tone down their intensity and not destroy traditional cultures from other places. I love what they are doing but at what cost is it going to be? Lose traditional values or find a fine balance between another country's dignity and contemporary fashion. your views anyone? Thank Randy D. That's a good point. additional info: how can you make sure people are legitimate in their help and what can you advise any country with this problem?

intelligent people to grammar check an introduction? Can you please give me some suggestions regarding the grammar & also the content of my introduction? thanks The age when Suleiman ruled the Ottoman Empire was a highly innovative and productive culture. A Contemporary view of ottoman design has since influenced the world of architecture and is greatly respected worldwide because of the engineering and classical principals of design. Ottoman architecture attributes meaning and reflects the diversity of ottoman culture and the Islamic values. Ottoman architecture was subsequently influenced by the earlier Byzantine designs, such as "Haya Sofya" in Constantinople. During the rule of Suleiman (reigned 520-66) architecture changed and evolved successfully under his patronage. Sinan was an influential architect as he considered the relationship between exterior, articulation, interior space and techniques and approaches of architectural design. Suleiman the Magnificent was enthusiastic patron of the arts and acquired vast wealth from his expanding economy. Mimar Sinan depended upon sulayman financially so he could produce architectural designs and new concepts which resulted from his experimentation. This essay will be discussing the principals of ottoman architecture such as the symbolic value of Mimar Sinans dome as well as focusing on the various structures of ottoman Islamic culture - economically, culturally, environmentally and politically.

I typed this essay, it for a DBQ. What are your thoughts? Much of our today’s society can be traced back to the Ancient Greek empire. The Greeks had made so many contributions to our modern civilization such as the architecture, medicine, and the Olympics. One of the most known contributions made from the Greeks was the remarkable architecture. For example, the White House has Ionic columns, which is just one of the three columns that were originated in Greek times. There are other buildings such as the Lincoln Memorial and Fifth Avenue School that include the columns too. But, not just the columns were kept from the Greek culture. The most famous building in Athens, the Parthenon, was completely hand carved, out of marble. The New York Public Library was also carved out of marble. Another one of the things bestowed by the Greeks was medicine. Around 400 B.C. a man named Hippocrates lived. He was the first known Greek to use science and experiment to determine the best cure for a particular illness. He promised that only his patients would benefit. He also said he will give no deadly medicine if asked. Today this is called the Hippocratic oath. Before anyone becomes a doctor he or she must pledge to this oath. The most known Greek tradition is the Olympics. Every four years this worldwide event takes place in a different venue each year, unlike in Greece when it always took place at Mount Olympus. This tradition today has men and women competing, but in ancient Greece only the men competed. Without the Greeks the Olympics may not exist. In fact, about 800 years after they were originated, the Olympics faded away. But this tradition was revived in the 1800’s and still lives to this day. The Greeks influenced the modern society with their astonishing contributions such as their amazing architecture, the extremely helpful medicine, and the worldwide Olympics. Without the Greek empire, our contemporary civilization, would be dissimilar.
Which thesis do you like best keep in mind i am in 9th grade and pre ib class (advanced class)? Without Greek mathematics, science, and architecture, modern math would not have evolved like it did in the past. Without Greek mathematic contributions in trigonometry, geometry, and scientific observations, modern physics, medicine, architecture, and math would not have evolved as quickly. Greek architecture, mathematics, and science have contributed heavily to the evolution of contemporary math, which we rely upon daily which one do you like the best i would like to say that my thesis is on greek math the whole entire subject i want to mix the 2nd and 3rd one together

Please kindly help me proofread the following paragraphs. .thanks a million? 2. Circle design The design concept is embodied to extend extensive ranges from contemporary to modern classic. 3. Square design In the past, the edge of square is much sharper compared to current design. Currently, we soften the square by combing culture cultivation and belief. We believe the development of architecture history in square shape would be similar to square faucets style. For instant, just like the synergy of British Edwardian architecture and Spanish Victoria architecture. Here, we also would like to demonstrate this brand new square faucet, Frank, the direction of its water flow is unique from normal faucet. This design consideration can reduce the chance of water splash on users while it’s easy to operate. 4 Curve design Curve is not absolute straight, but it is a line that bends smoothly and regularly from being straight. The existence of curve is caused by the changes of nature environment as lives need to follow the nature rule to survive, like tree trunks bend in different angles. In the pervious years, the products representing curve were focusing on classic style. Such as the typical products, England swan double-handle faucet and south Europe chrome gold single-handle faucet. This year, we would like to demonstrate modern and contemporary styles.

anyone up for proof reading? (ART)? INTRO Throughout time artists have expressed through their work what is relevant to them. Both Traditional and contemporary artists have their own unique working practices in relation to their chosen art form. Artists develop there distinctive stylesIn particular contemporary artists Barbara Kruger and Peter booth who are consistently pushing the boundaries in the society they live in. Traditional artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo have pioneered their era, and produced intense paintings, most of the time being autobiographical. These four artists are driven by distinctively different influences, cultural contexts witch ultimately develop their own style. The influences that driven the artists is major reason why there artwork is recognised today. PARA1 - INFLUENCES A major starting point for any artists is their source of inspiration; it’s what drives them in their creative work. Kahlo drew her inspiration for her artworks from her experiences she suffered in her life. . Van Goghs particular journey in life heavily influenced his artwork as a way of finding meaning for his pain, life experiences and heightened emotions. Van Gogh has often been hailed as the essential expressionist painter. Also Van Gogh’s inspiration is largely from the places he’s been too, and the people he met. Paris is a city that largely influenced Van Gogh, where he met fellow artist Paul Gauguin . His whole life, Van Gogh struggled with his inner-self, many people have different theories to why he did such crazy things (such as cutting his own ear off), some believe he had schizophrenia, and bipolar disease, but it will never really be found out for sure. His depressive and violent state of mind eventually lead to his death, dying of a self-inflicted gun wound at the age of thirty seven. Van Gogh was very innovative and communicated his issues, he painted what he saw and felt through his own style. Booth’s early childhood influenced him greatly, especially growing up during World War 2. Living in the industrial town of Sheffield, he drew inspiration from the dull bombed left overs of buildings, the burning furnaces and the dark skies. He also used to frequently see miners arise from the caves they were working in covered in soot and eyes red from the work. I think this is where he got his inspiration for the use of red and black, particularly in figures eyes. His figures can also appear circus like, so he may have drawn inspiration from things like that. People that influenced him were a Russian writer-Tolstoy and Printmakers Blake and Goya. His fear of a nuclear war and perhaps the world ending is shown throughout his work. He also draws inspiration from what humans do to the environment and what they could possibly do in the future. Kruger’s inspiration is drawn mainly from Television, Music and the stereotypical situations of everyday life where she openly criticises PARA 2: - HISTORICAL/CULTURAL An artist’s background, cultural and historical is largely reflected in the art work that they produce. It may be very subtle, or it may dominate the particular artwork. Traditional artists Kahlo, And Van Gogh are largely influenced by their backgrounds. Kahlo was born in Mexico in 1907, and she reveals her heritage in paintings as Mexican Backgrounds and symbolic colours. Her artwork can be viewed as autobiographical through her extensive output of self portraits. She continually explored her identity throughout her painting, and expresses herself thoroughly. Her paintings were all personal to her, portraying what she was, or what she wanted. She shows her self as a Mexican woman, physically and emotionally damaged and it was believed she died of an overdose of tranquilizers. Kahlo incorporates a story through the symbols she uses in her work. In her piece “The Two Fridas” (image below) we see a double self portrait of herself. They are holding hands and both have their hearts exposed. One of the Frida’s in wearing traditional Mexican clothing and the other, very European style. The exposed heart of the Mexican Frida is full whereas the heart of the European Frida is sliced in half. This choice of images was to represent Kahlo’s struggle of being a Mexican girl at heart but marriage to a European man. She shows that she was obviously not comfortable pretending to be something she is not and that her contentment is in her Mexican heritage. “The Two Fridas” PARA 3 - THEMES & IDEAS Kahlo depicted the indigenous culture of her country in a style combining Realism, Symbolism and Surrealism PARA 4 – SUBJECT MATTER Booth is a contemporary artist born in Sheffield, England, 1940, into the Second World War. Sheffield was a town of industry and factories and after the war and bombing raids the factories turned to destructed wasteland. Booth grew up in these surroundings, which highly influenced the bleak, devastated landscapes in his work. After working on abstract pieces for a number of years, Booth began painting carnival-like figures that originated from his personal dreams and experiences. These landscapes and dreamlike figures became a theme in his work that highlighted his distinctive style. All of his pieces are created with a similar colour scheme; monochromatic tones of black, whites and greys and hints of bold colours, mainly red, to highlight particular sections. The bold colours are used to direct the viewer’s eyes around the extremely large paintings. Booth also creates his distinctive style with his use of materials and techniques. Van Gogh’s most famous painting to date is “Starry Night” in 1889. In this painting he uses complemenatry colours, and the paint is applied very thick and creates a impasto. He uses brush strokes to suggest feeling and movement, applying his paint to to show the form, direction and contours. It was painted at the height of his production and his passion for life. It's a nocturnal picture, painted while he was staying at the psychiatric hospital of Saint Remy-of-Provence. One if the first thing is noticed is the overwhelming night sky, which takes up most of the background. Its swirling, flowing lines appear to be swishing across the background in this gentle, wavy motion and seem to be merging at the centre to form this spiral-like formation. Eleven fiery yellow stars that look like huge fireballs illuminate this whole piece and contrast with the cool blue, fluid night sky that takes on an amazing variety of shades of blue and grey. There is also the crescent moon at the top right hand corner that radiates a more orange, brighter light from the rest of the stars. The view of the night sky and village is partially blocked by this huge cypress bush in the foreground. It has this writhing quality to it and its black green colouring stands out to the rest of the relatively pastel piece. The houses are tiny and inconspicuously painted in the bottom right corner of the painting and blend in quite well with the forest and mountains. The architecture of the village is quaint and simple and no light illuminates the village, giving the impression that everyone there is probably asleep. In general, his brush strokes are heavy and thick and have this insistent, hectic rhythm to it. As a result, this painting has an illusion of constantly being in motion. In Painting 1977 (Pictured Below) , Booth has created a feeling of a lonely and unpredictable world. Booth has placed himself in the centre of the work, creating the focal point. The city is on his right side, surrounded by a red glow, as if it’s all on fire and going down in flames. The scarce environment adds to the look of a futuristic city, with nothing left and the present that doesn’t seem to be so certain. The only friend he seems to have is the white bull terrier dog, who watch’s the figure, as if to see what’s next in his future. He has created a sense of a different and darker world, that’s future is perhaps bleak. He does this by using the shades of Red, Browns Blacks And Whites, by dramatically changing the colour in the making of the piece. CONCLUSION: Artists can use different techniques, materials, subject matter and choice of aesthetic qualities to present their work in a personal way. These develop the artists distinctive style that makes the artwork recognizable as by that particular artists work. They can also create stories and messages by their choices of images whether they are original, inspired by another artist, inspired by experience or appropriated from another artists work.
(Re-posted) Is this personal statement okay..? please read.? My first memory of enjoying art and design was from a young age, as I had won an art box set for Best Sketchbook, in year 2003. Also achieving first place in a Rangoli competition, I feel my drawing and designing skills have grown from this. I have always been interested in making and creating new things by using scrap materials, different mediums, textures and colours. Over the years, I have become more independent with my work and thoughts, which I gained throughout my A-levels. I have wanted to pursue a career in interior architecture for a while now and am eager to express and explore it through university. The possible chance to shape, life style and surroundings, is incredible. Interior architect being a unique subject; it fascinated me that the environment we live in is enjoyed by people on an everyday-basis. I recently took on some voluntary work experience, which amongst other features involved an element of interior work. This encouraged me to be creative and do first-hand decision making for layouts, themes and furnishings, and being responsive to their needs. Currently doing a foundation diploma, I have gained more independence with my work and ideas, as well as broadening my mind about the use of materials by being more experimental. Slowly beginning to push the creativity side of me, it has expanded the way my mind works and thinks, in terms of analysing and reflecting on my own creations. Interior architecture is not only having a skill but also a combination of creativity and imagination, which I think many designers have such as Rachel Ashwell that I aspire to be like. Whilst being in America this summer, I had come across Mint Museum of Art situated in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was filled with a range of art from ancient, contemporary to decorative textile and sculptures. The artwork was from broad variety of cultures, and I personally had enjoyed the insights of ethnicity, which was portrayed through the work. Recently visiting an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, I found the sketches and insight of architectural work done by Sir Nickolas Grimshaw, very interesting. I admire the thought process and amount of detail included in his developments, which for me shows the connection between problem solving and originality. Also visiting Anish Kapoor’s gallery in London, I was amazed at the artwork, because it was so neat and expressive. I find when observing the sculptures, it makes the mind work in a different way due to it being surreal and attractive. I want to study interior architecture because, I am intrigued by the opportunity to explore and learn, which can allow me to be expressive and development my strengths. I feel enthusiastic about designing and making, so being a hardworking person, I am open to challenges. I believe overcoming challenges can only further improve minds, and increase the ability to expand our thinking. Therefore I am eager about the prospect of working with others, to see how their interpretations and aspirations vary from my own; as well as gain an insight and inspiration from contrasting works.
Please answer the question below. Thanks? Resources: Course readings; materials located through the University library or other sources · Identify a specific common theme found in three different contemporary art forms. · Select from the following art forms: music, writing, visual arts, architecture, and sculpture. · List the components of the theme and the areas of commonality. · Answer the following questions in your paper: o How is the theme expressed in each piece? o What are the main differences or similarities? o If there are subthemes, are they the same for each piece or do they tend to vary? o What about the theme makes it compelling enough to be expressed in diverse media? o If the mediums for expression are from different time periods, how has the expression of the theme changed over time? o Which piece do you believe most successfully communicates the theme, and why?
What do you think? Does it capture your interest? This is the beginning of a little piece I wrote. Constructive criticism would be appreciated. The neighborhood is of blended architecture, a smattering of flavors: elegant Tudors, magnificent Georgians, charming Cape Cods, and contemporary brick and mortar homes. Mature trees adorn the parkway, prime specimens in the peak of their lives. Landscaping is prim and proper, and each home comes with a complimentary canine. There is Ozzie, my canine companion, Bernie, Sophie, Muddy, Snoopy, and Candi, among others. This is Ponca Drive, a seemingly picturesque community. I moved to Ponca Drive with high hopes, an expanding family, and abounding horizons. I left Ponca Drive broken-hearted, my future was uncertain, my family disintegrated, and my notion of the family forever changed.

Why is the reputation of Pharaonic Egypt so bad? Looking at the media and the general public perceptions of Ancient Egyptian culture, there seems to be a lot of negative stereotypes about Pharaonic Egypt, i.e. myths about huge armies of slaves, human sacrifice, conspiracy theories, curses and the view that the Egyptians were just in some vague way "evil" or "uncivilised". However these same negative connotations are only rarely applied to other cultures in the region, either contemporaries such as the Sumerians, Mittanians, Hittites, or those who developed in the Classical age such as Greece and Rome. Further questions: Why has modern research into Egyptian culture, that has shown most of these myths to be false not been absorbed into public awareness? Is it just the Bible tales? Rome and other cultures are also attacked in the Bible, but their reputation has not been blackened in the same way as Egypt's has. Why do you think this is? Is it just because Egypt is "different"? A writing system that appears odd and incomprehensible to the general public, architecture that (unlike classical architecture, which we have copied) is different and unfamiliar? Names that are unfamiliar? Is the age, endurance or impression of power considered un-nerving or threatening? ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: What can be done to combat these stereotypes and myths? Replies so far mention the Bible as important in perpetuating these myths, but why are the ones concerning Egypt so potent and treated as "history", when those concerning other cultures such as the Babylonians and Romans are mostly regarded as essentially unimportant, or as folk-tales? @ ADAM: Yes, Adam, Egypt did conquer foreign lands that were important economically or for security against invasion, and this was in the Middle as well as New Kingdom. However, with the exception of Nubia (which adopted Egyptian customs by assimilation and integration rather than by forced conversion), Egypt did not impose it's religion or culture upon foreigners. Compare this approach with that of later Empires, including the Greeks who attempted to Hellenise many aspects of Egyptian culture and society, and now revered as the fathers of civilisation. There is no archaeological evidence of the "Exodus", nor of forced religious conversion in Egypt at all during the Pharaonic period. The Pharaoh worshipped "idols" because that was an integral part of Egyptian religion. The Greeks and Romans worshipped "idols" too. The known sculptural artists from Egypt were all free born Egyptian professionals, living at the height of the Empire, when foreigners were widely available.
do Humans alone practice religion because they're the only creatures to have evolved imagination? No animals, not even our nearest relatives the chimpanzees, can do this, argues Bloch. Instead, he says, they're restricted to the mundane and Machiavellian social interactions of everyday life, of sparring every day with contemporaries for status and resources. And the reason is that they can't imagine beyond this immediate social circle, or backwards and forwards in time, in the same way that humans can. Bloch believes our ancestors developed the necessary neural architecture to imagine before or around 40-50,000 years ago, at a time called the Upper Palaeological Revolution, the final sub-division of the Stone Age. At around the same time, tools that had been monotonously primitive since the earliest examples appeared 100,000 years earlier suddenly exploded in sophistication, art began appearing on cave walls, and burials began to include artefacts, suggesting belief in an afterlife, and by implication the "transcendental social". http://www.dimaggio.org/Heretic/God%20on%20the%20Brain.htm REPOSTED DUE TO BEING REPORTED AND DELETED (TWICE)

Please tell me what you think about this painting and the its description below. Thanks for you time!? Click on the link below to view the painting and then read the description... Are the sentences connected logically? (http://img37.imageshack.us/i/imag0374h.jpg/) This work contains a collection of symbolic elements that have had a significant effect on my life in one way or another. Some of these symbols represent values held in common by most people as they cope with this global situation that we live in today, while other symbols represent personal values that I grew up with. Some of the symbols might just be a materialization of some sort of Utopian dream that I am trying to live in order to make my life better or to help me accept reality as it is. I will start with my favorite symbol, which is the suspension bridge. My fascination with suspension bridges began at early age when I fell in love with their aesthetics. I was especially fascinated by the shape and color of the Golden Gate Bridge. This fascination is hard to explain, but it is linked to my love for the art of architecture, and that is the reason for the setting that I chose, which is a room with two tables, a painting, a mirror, and a balcony. I chose the suspension bridge to be seen from the balcony because it has always been my dream to live in San Francisco, in a room overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. The second symbol that I find to be unique and interesting is in the painting on the right, which depicts a woman tight-roping near the sea. This picture is the work of the brilliant contemporary artist Janine Antoni , who practiced tight roping at one point in her life and who produced this striking piece of work, showing herself walking on the horizon. In the documentary "Art:21," produced by the PBS, Antoni says: “I practiced tight roping for about an hour a day, and after about a week I started to feel like I’m now getting my balance. I started to notice that it wasn’t that I was getting more balanced, but that I was getting more comfortable with being out of balance. Rather than getting nerves and over compensating that I could just compensate enough, and I thought I wish I could do that in my life.”1 Her deep and thoughtful words moved me as soon as I saw the picture and I started to think about how she took a basic practice, like tight roping, and turned it into a mechanism through which she learned how to cope with her everyday routine. Antoni shot this beautiful picture of herself “walking on the horizon” in the Bahamas, where she grew up. I find her work fascinating, novel, and very thoughtful. It is interesting how some of us dream and how our utopian mind flies us from the land of the impossible to the land of the possible. It would be interesting if I could hang this picture in my room to remind myself that there is more to life than the narrow tube that I see life though sometimes. The third symbol is the peace symbol, which is a physical representation that I borrowed to materialize my desire to peacefully accept everyone and respect the world around me with its juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness. It signifies my childish cry to the world, asking it to accept me, or perhaps to just give me a chance, regardless of all the genetic flaws that I was born with that give me a different personality that is not well-perceived by everyone around me. The peace symbol, in my humble opinion, summarizes all the beautiful dreams that John Lennon imagined in his song, Imagine. Fourth is the anarchy symbol which also represents my childish protest against all the religious and political ideologies I was brought up to believe in or respect, even when they made no sense to me. I was born a free soul and I want to die a free soul, with no religious beliefs or political ideologies imposed upon me culturally. I put this symbol beside the peace symbol because to me they resonate together; you cannot ask for peace if you are not ready to rebel or rise above the rusty ideas with which you were raised. I placed the anarchy and peace symbols inside the flowers because to me they are ideas that flourish worldwide. The fifth symbol is the cat, which represents my desire to save an animal soul and give it a place in this world that we selfishly built only for ourselves, leaving little or no space in which other animals could enjoy their rights on Earth. For the last century the human population has been increasing exponentially, expanding into every inhabitable piece of land and destroying nature and earth. We humans have forgotten that not only buildings and cities build civilizations; our respect for the rights of animals and the beauty of nature can build the greatest of civilizations. I believe that man is obligated to save nature and its component parts, of which animals are an essential ingredient. The sixth symbol is the mirror on the left side. The mirror represents my struggle to attain perfection. A mirror plays a major part in the life of a person seeking physical perfection. This might not be what I am seeking, but I use
AP Art History FRQ Help (30min essay)? I'm required to provide two pieces of art that demonstrate a challenge against established contemporary traditions. 1 piece of art needs to be chosen prior to 1800BCE and one after. I know that I'm going to write about Akenhaten's reformed Egypt under Aten for my earlier example (sunken relief w/ Nefertiti I suppose). But I can't determine an art piece that truly challenges established artistic traditions post 1800 BCE. I was thinking of using Rauschenberg or even abstract artists like Mondrian or Pollock, but I'm not too adamant about my choices. Any suggestions? (Architectures such as Ghery's Guggenheim are allowed also)

What does it take to be an architect? Should one be good at drawing? I am asking because i am not that great at drawing (creatively), but i feel that if i learned the technical skills i could draw what i needed. I am asking because i always see these high end, contemporary, modern homes where i deliver pizza (working through college) and really like that look and am always thinking of what i would do differently to the home etc. I have taken the history of architecture and i really enjoyed the class. I am majoring in art history--would this be a good springboard to architecture or am i way off?
contemporary architecture? lets discuss about architecture and its revolutions happening.
