sustainable architecture.? i want to know the disadvantages of sustainable architecture. please list as many as you can...
How many years of school is required for a masters in sustainable architecture? My girlfriend is currently going to school for nursing. She is considering switching her major so that she can eventually get a masters degree in sustainable/environmental architecture. Currently she has about two years of credits under her belt, a few electives, algebra 1 and 2, health, biology, chemistry, anatomy, english 1 and 2, psychology, about 34-40 credit hours-but she has no architecture coruses under her belt. Does anyone know about how much longer she would have to go to school if she switched her major next semester?
Where can I major in Sustainable Architecture? I'm an incoming high school senior with an interest in architecture and ecology. I want to find a university with an architecture or engineering program focused primarily on building environmentally efficient housing and developing new ways of making houses and products more eco-friendly. From what I've researched, Sustainable Architecture sounds like what I want, but I'm open to any other majors similar. Any suggestions?
what is a good essay question for sustainable architecture? I'm in year ten and we have to write a 1000 words essay. i chose to write mine on sustainable architecture and I've researched a lot of the techniques and environmentally friendly materials, etc, so I'd like it to include that. they also have to be opinionated, so it has to be something that doesnt have a straight out black and white answer, and I'd also like to look mostly at the building process and details rather than any politics etc involved. Any help in appreciated, thanks in advance!
what green and sustainable architecture solutions are suited in the Philippines? i need a list of green and sustainable architectural solutions that are suited and economical to use in the tropical philippine islands. i have already though of these in mind: passive cooling, rainwater harvesting, use of local and sustainable building materials, efficient building methods, argon filled glass panels, water saving bathroom fixtures, insulation (these are correct, right?) your opinions, thoughts and suggestions about green architecture in tropical countries are appreciated...pls include your sources if possible. THANKS!!
Is there any university in Rio de Janeiro where I can get a masters in Bioclimatic or sustainable architecture? Is sustainable architecture in dense urban community good or bad? Is sustainable design necessary in a hot tropical climate especially in an urban core zone?
what are some similarities between old and new(sustainable) architecture? I know that there are many differences between the two but I'm trying to find out some similarities that they have. What has been used in the past that is still used today? There are so many differences in the two that it's hard to find any common areas.
Can concrete be used as part of a green and sustainable piece of architecture? Anyone any sites or information on whether concrete is environmentally friendly and a sustainable piece of architecture? Is it green? Why?
Sustainable architecture, can the benefits outweigh the costs? This is the research question I thought of for a white paper I have due in a few weeks. Any ideas, web sites, articles, studies, or research papers would be helpful. A white paper is a very formalized research paper. My instructor told me she did one for her masters degree program. By ARCHITECTURE I mean the design of buildings, including; homes, businesses, and industrial infrastructure. By sustainable I mean building with renewable resources, utilizing renewable enerery sources, and heating and cooling efficient. Can the extra money spent to build a "green" building return enough money, with reduced energy and heating costs and increased market value?
Sustainable design? Is an engineering or architecture degree better? I am currently in my first year of engineering and am thinking of majoring in civil engineering. If I want to do to sustainable design of commercial, residential, or industrial buildings (making their construction, energy consumption, and materials environmentally friendly) would it be better for me to complete my civil engineering degree and specialize in sustainable design/architecture? OR would it be better to transfer into architecture and get a degree in that and then a masters in architecture and sustainable design?
What do you think of sustainable architecture? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_architecture

Can anyone explain to me about Building Technology in Sustainable Design or refer me a link on a related site? I'm supposed to do a report on Building Technologies in Sustainable Design but I'm not too clear of what I'm supposed to write. So if someone can point me to the right direction for me to do this, that would be great! Sustainable design as in Sustainable Architecture/Building =)
entropic?? I was reading abook about sustainable architecture? and red this word .. breifly... can you say what does it mean?

What is the best minor for an architecture major? I am just starting my architecture classes at Portland State University. I want to know what the best minor would be to take. I am thinking either Business, Sustainability, or Sustainable Urban Development? What one of the three would be the best for a career in architecture and why. If not one of those three, what would you prefer?
I want to make environmentally friendly and sustainable structures and buildings? I don't know what I'd need to study? I have an interest in making structures that are environmentally sound (or as much as hey could be), such as that work with the natural area and ecology surrounding it, and to use materials that are sustainable and better for the environment, etc. Do I need to look into engineering for this? Or for architecture? I'm not sure what I need to look at...
What is sustainable development? Why is it important? What are some examples of how architecture has been adapted to promote sustainable development?
Anyone good sources for Articles About Ecological Architecture ? I am searching for a very good researched artikel on sustainable design and Green Building. Architecture program at UW? Does anyone happen to know if the University of Washington has a good architecture program and if they have a sustainable architecture department at all?
how do i prepare for interviewing with a small business? i'm interviewing with a small architectural firm next week, and i cannot find much info about the company. i don't know how big it is (i know it is small) or how long it's been around. i only know of a couple projects they've done, that they do sustainable architecture, and that they seem to have a good attitude. oh, and that the studio is located in the owner's remodelled garage. i don't know what to wear, what specifically to ask, what to emphasise in my portfolio... HELP!
What is the cheapest way to start a small sustainable community that is as self sufficient as possible? I am in the process of designing a commune with a small group of dedicated individuals. Obviously there is a limitless amount of things to consider, but I would like to have any views or opinions on how to go about doing this. We would like to start with land, and build everything from there, whilst remaining as self sufficient and environmentally friendly as possible. Any ideas on income, economy, government, sanitation, agriculture, engineering, architecture, sewage, etc are welcome!
How can I get a job in sustainable building? I'm interested in working with green architecture and design, such as straw bale construction, etc. I have a B.A. in Geologic Sciences and have been working in education for the past five years, so it's a bit of a change. What should I do to get started?
Is there any criticism toward green architecture? on Wikipedia it says "Sustainable architecture, it can be argued, does not rigorously form a part of architecture as a discipline[citation needed]. Rather, it is a concern in the building construction industry as a whole, and given the dominance of construction techniques and building subsystems, it should be considered a part of civil engineering as a discipline.[citation needed] There are also conflicting ethical and political orientations depending on the viewpoints.[20] Numerous schools of architecture exclude sustainable architecture as a part of their curriculum, and it is considered to be a fashionable subject at the moment[citation needed]." i dont understand what it means
what sustainable system can I use for a water wall? NOTE: The project's site is located adjacent to the beach and is on an estuary. Thank you ***Mexican-US border
Is a double major in Environmental Studies & Arts & Ideas a good background for architecture graduate studies? My first major is in Arts & Ideas (an interdisciplinary major in studio art, foreign language, literature, and art history and theory). For a long time, I have been trying to choose between Architecture, Economics, and Biology for my second major (I'm doing a double major). However, recently I found that U of M offers an environmental studies major which focuses both on the science (Chemistry, Biology, Geosci, Environmental Sci) and Policy (Economics, Political science, communications, etc) of environmentalism. Also, within this major, I can specialize in environmental economics or environment & urban planning. Would it make sense to double major in Arts & Ideas and Environmental Studies and then pursue a Professional Masters degree in Architecture in graduate school? The reason I think this might be better than getting a B.S. in Arch right now is because the B.S. in Arch is very specialized, and though it is the faster track for becoming an architect, I am not necessarily in a hurry. Plus, I have many varied interests in the arts, natural sciences and social sciences and I see my undergraduate years as the greatest opportunity to get a diversified education. I’m wondering if Architecture graduate school admissions would view such an interdisciplinary double major in studio art, foreign language, environmental science/ chemistry, and economics as a sign that I am unfocused or as a well rounded education that would prepare me for the architecture program…maybe especially for studying, for example, sustainable architecture. Also, I’ve heard that environmental studies has a reputation for being an easy major or unfocused or unpopular or something (not at all saying this is true, I just learned about this major and am still reading into it) I would appreciate any opinions or input :)
I can't choose between civil engineering and architecture majors.? I'm good in math, physics, and i love to draw and design. I also want to help the environment and society make its change to sustainable living in the near future. But, I have a problem choosing my major, which I narrowed down to Civil Engineering and Architecture. I would want to be either a civil engineer or an architect. What are the pros and cons of each major/career? If you are majoring in, have career in, or have any interest in these two, please answer. I know its not all about the money, but I was wondering what is the salaries is in these two careers.
One Year Art courses in California for International Student? My brother has done Bachelors of Architecture in India and is working in sustainable architecture firm. He is interested in coming to California for a one year masters program(or any high level course) and then go back to India with the experience and the certificate. What careers could i possibly have with the following degrees? all of the career suggestions that universities make in their prospectuses are a little vague so i would like some specific answers please. degrees: animal behavior zoology landscape architecture product design/sustainable design and geography. any help would be very much appreciated. thanks :)
help with choosing a major- architecture? im a student at UC Berkeley, going into my 2nd yr, & would like to ask which major/career path sounds better & why (& also what I can do with these degrees): -architecture w/ a minor in sustainable design -double major in architecture & environmental economics and policy -architecture & landscape architecture Thanks! :)
Milan zero emission neighborhood? in anticipation of Expo in Milan, I heard that the city is preparing with various interventions, including sustainable architecture. I heard about a neighborhood Fiera Milano zero emission. you know more?
Is it worthwhile for an architect to do a PhD in Sustainable Design/Environmental Engineering? I am 25 years old. I have a Diploma in Architecture, an MSc in Energy Efficiency of Buildings and 2 years work experience. I have the opportunity to do a PhD (I have been offered the funding for a full time program). I love research and I am really interested in doing that. But people around me have been really discouraging, telling me that I will lose real-world experience. What should I do?
How can I get 500 free boxes? I'm doing a sustainable design project for my architecture class. They need to be 6"x6"x12". Do you know of a way that I could have these donated or sold for really cheap? I have a week and a half to finish!
Sustainable Forersts (lumber) in California? Does anyone know the location of sustainable forests that are used for wood harvest in California? I am an architecture student and I am doing some research for my building project. but i can not locate this forests. I would really appreciate it, specially if they are redwood forests, thanks in advace
Environmental Studies or Art Studio: Which BA major is better for going into architecture graduate program? I'm highly interested in pursuing a masters degree in architecture (since there are programs out there for people with a bachelor's degree in other areas than architecture). I was wondering if I should stick with my current major (environmental studies) or if I should switch to art studio to get down to drawing and such? My environmental classes are the reason I want to go into architecture so that I can create sustainable and eco-friendly designs. However, I have no major art experiences so creating a portfolio on my own will be difficult. I need your opinions! Thanks!
How much math is really required for an architect? Is this the right career for me? My interests are in fine art, travel, literature, and sustainable living. I am the quiet type and like to slowly generate ideas. Math has never been my niche. I was going to major in painting, but decided it's not the right path because it's not very intellectually engaging, and considering how time consuming it is it is so hard to survive off it. And of course, it's unstable. So i'm looking into going to school in British Columbia for architecture and painting on the side. Any feedback much appreciated..
I need help with translation from English to Chinese? How would you translate 'sustainable design' in Chinese especially when you are talking about architecture? Please let me know the pingyin and accent marks. Thanks in advance!
Can I be a Design Engineering Manager with a Bachelor of environmental design? I have excellent leadership/managerial skills and I understand the bottom line. My background in environmental design is one year short of an M. Arch so it is basically pre-architecture I took such classes as physics, structures, building construction, Environmental controls which is mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and sustainable systems etc. [very applied sciency] So does my background qualify me for a job like this? if not what would i need to do to qualify?
solar chimney? Has anyone ever installed on in their building, or do you know if it costs a lot for a developer to include in a new house? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_chimney#Solar_chimney_and_sustainable_architecture
how important do you think green architecture will become? Frank Lloyd Wright has been lauded for his fusion of form and function. His structures are known for blending into the surrounding landscape. Even inside the New York Guggenheim Museum, despite being surrounded with traffic and the busyness of downtown Manhattan, has the feel of being among the pine trees, breathing fresh air, and sunlight. With so much focus on environmental concerns, green architecture is a popular trend. In fact, much of New Orleans, Ninth Ward has been rebuilt with the use of sustainable materials and energy-saving design. As we continue in the twenty-first century, how important do you think green architecture will become? Do you think it will cause us to sacrifice form for function? As you prepare your answer, consider the aesthetic appeal and practical functions of the buildings surrounding you.
What will be the impact of sustainable architecture in the future? In the present? I am working on a term paper about sustainable architecture
can you suggest a name for my building? it will be a mid-rise high-density housing/condo development in the heart of the philippine urban area with sustainable architecture solutions incorporated into the building design. any idea is appreciated, sorry because i have'nt uploaded any drawings/sketches to help you think of a name. =)
Architecture? Anyone? I have a project we gotta do... and it's to design a restaurant and a clubhouse for the military... the officers and the soldiers... my concept is focusing mainly on green, sustainable buildings.... i looked at ken yeang's work.. VERY inspirational... can ne one help?
what is solar energy? in sustainable architecture with pv cells
Pursuing more than one Master's degree? I'm going to be graduating from a highly-ranked liberal arts school this spring and I'm worried about the future...namely what I'm going to do for graduate school, because I know that I want to continue on towards a Master's degree in addition to my BA in Biology and Environmental studies. However, I'm torn between different graduate programs. I am interested in architecture, though my experience has been limited to a study-abroad semester studying pre-architecture foundations in Copenhagen and a sustainable architecture class at my school. I only know that I love art which is why I'm minoring in visual arts. I am also considering a career in environmental engineering though, which matches my interest in science, particularly biology/ecology and which may be more practical since I know that it is difficult to be an architect. Would it be worthwhile to apply to grad programs offering joint-degrees in both? If so, what schools offer these kinds of programs? Otherwise, is it better to just get my master's in environmental engineering and then applying to architecture school? What other options do I have?
Could someone please give me some advice for my college major decision? If I want to go into sustainable architecture, would it be better to get a B.S. in Arch now and then pursue a M. arch in the future with a focus on environmental design or the other way around (get a B.S. with a double major in environmental studies and studio arts & theory - a liberal arts major- now, then apply for graduate school to get a M. Arch) ? Also, my university, UM- Ann Arbor, does not offer a professional B. Arch Degree. It only offers a pre-professional B.S. arch degree...after which I would need to go to grad school for 2.5-3 yrs. to get a M Arch professional degree...so both ways would probably take about the same amount of time. If anyone out there is in the field of "green" architecture, do you have any advice as to how I could best build up a solid knowledge base to go into this field? Also, is it a bad idea to have two interdisciplinary majors?? I see some people here say that these majors are for people who are lazy or unfocused and that they have many "easy" classes...but I see different subjects to be interlinked and not strictly specialized, and I am definitely not a lazy person. I am a honors sophomore with a 4.0 even after taking all the most failed courses at UM in math, physics, and economics. I have also worked hard for my sustainability/ beautification student forum to put environmental solutions in action and have designed several murals for UM buildings...I chose my majors and put a lot of work into my extracurriculars, because I love what I do, not because I am some unfocused student going to college just for the sake of going to college...But I am afraid that just because I have this label as someone with an arty interdisciplinary major, employers will see me as a lazy, unfocused person...and maybe it would be better to just go for the very specialized course in architecture now instead of leaving that for grad school? Kitten UM has an undergrad Architecture school that is ranked 6th in the nation by US News and Report and a grad Arch program that is ranked in the top 10.I do not consider it a waste of money. My concern is not primarily the time, because even if I get a professional B Arch now, I am still going to get an M.S. in environmental design...I'm trying to decide whether majoring in something else now will give me a better, more diverse knowledge base for architecture rather than learning technical skills right away. I want to make a real impact on the world. I considered transferring to Cornell, but I believe UM gives a better preparation for arch as a form of engineering. Cornell is a bit more arty, which is VERY appealing to me, but I feel I should learn more engineering too. Finally, I plan on applying to grad programs at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, UM, etc. I did research and a lot of the programs I liked are tough to get into so I want to make sure that Interdisciplinary is a good choice.
What group would I be? Is there even a label for people like me? Someone was asking me earlier what social group I am a part of, and I couldn't answer them, maybe you guys can help me out. I dress like a jock, and go to the gym all the time, but I don't care at all for sports. I can and will debate Philosophy for hours on end. I can easily discuss things like science, psychology, biology, etc with nerds and geeks. I don't really have much artistic talent myself, but many of my friends are Anime artists, and we talk about anime all the time. Although I am friends with all sorts of people, from the nerds, hipsters, and furries to jocks and preps, to rockers, stoners, and ghetto gang members. My tastes in music Range from Bach and Beethoven to The Beatles and the B-52's from B.B. King and the Black-eyed Peas to Beyonce and Bjork. I am a very zen minded Secular Buddhist, and I meditate daily. I am rather stoic about everything and have not been depressed in several years. I simply let things happen without getting emotionally attached. I am gay but not at all flamboyant about it, my sexuality means little to me, though sex is great. My Three passions are Philosophy, Altruism, and Architecture. I plan to go into the field of Sustainable Architecture, but not to design silly modern style "shiny metal cube" houses, but buildings that have their design roots in ancient and medieval forms of architecture. My self-determined purpose in life is to use my talents and abilities to help better the lives of as many people as I possibly can. I have no desire to be some vow-of-poverty saint, and I have every intention to become very wealthy. I cant really find a group that I fit into. Is it that I simply don't know the name, or am I so much of an outlier that I am one of the few people that are Uncategorizable?
What are the chances of the following succeeding? January 18, 2008 8:31 AM PST Masdar City in Abu Dhabi to lay claim to greenest city Posted by Martin LaMonica The cleanest city in the entire world will take root next month in Abu Dhabi, a place best known for its oil. At the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, a model of Masdar City is scheduled to be unveiled on Monday. The three-day conference is hosted by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co.'s Masdar Initiative, which is investing in a range of ventures, including clean-tech start-ups. An artist's rendering of the overall plan of Masdar City. A model will be unveiled Monday. (Credit: Masdar) In February, Masdar (which means "the source" in Arabic) will break ground on the six-square-kilometer city that its backers say will be the first zero-pollution, zero-waste city. The city will be capable of housing 47,500 people, who are scheduled to start moving there in 2009. Construction is expected to take 10 years. The vision of the city, designed by Foster and Partners, is to be a model for sustainable architecture. A solar-photovoltaic power plant will deliver energy to buildings. Builders also envision using solar canopies that provide shade, as well as power. A vision of Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. (Credit: Foster and Partners) The city will be placed to take advantage of the cool sea breezes, while a perimeter wall around the entire city will protect buildings from the hot desert air and noise from the nearby Abu Dhabi airport. No cars will be allowed in the city. People will get around through an electric light-rail system that will be linked to the center of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. A desalination facility will be 80 percent more efficient than existing plants, and all wastewater will be purified and recycled to grow plants that could be used for biofuels. Masdar City will be the home of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, which backers hope will attract some of the best academics from the around the world. Also envisioned are research and development facilities from multinational companies and start-ups in the clean technology area. Topics: Green buildings, Solar What chances does something like this have of succeeding?

Vision of sustainable living too far out? Thirty years of work for nothing? No real people out there to join? When I was thirteen years old I started to have the idea about a place where people would live together in a different way than in this society. They would do things they like to do and not just for themselves but for the well of others. They would express themselves freely and also in an artistic way. Finding out about themselves as the most important ‘work’ because knowing that we are all in a growing process, to free ourselves to connect with spaces beyond ourselves. I designed places like this and years later I studied architecture still with the same vision. Then life took over for twelve years with family life, making money, etc. until this finished and I found a beautiful place in midst of unspoiled nature. I bought this land and started to realize my dream. The first years I build up the place. Some times alone, some times with paid workers. When the buildings were finished I offered the place to therapy groups. This went on for a few years. It was difficult to find people for such a project, except hippies in those days, who wanted to space out. I was strictly against use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco and there seemed hardly anybody without. People came, were staying for some time and then left. This went on for several years and I learned a lot about human behavior… To make the long story short: I tried for more than thirty years. Once I wanted to give up and I had sold the place already with a small down payment, but then the buyer had an accident and I had to move back. Years past by and again I wanted to give up and offered the place for someone who would continue with a similar intention. I wanted to give the place for free, but nobody responded. Probably people thought this is a trick or I’m crazy. So I continued and sometimes there were times when up to twenty people were living together and were feeling good, things worked quite well. But all were traveler and after some time they left, again a coming and going. Our place is pretty well organized: There is living space for about twenty people, there is plenty of food for even more people, there are absolutely no money problems and there is all the freedom one can dream of. At the moment there is too much work for the few people living here, but with four/fife people more it would be easy and with four hours of daily work we could maintain the place, animals and the people here. The last two years there was a lack of people and work has accumulated, so we need still to clean up, but the chaos is not worse than somewhere else… We are working on several projects like distributing information about meditation or how we call it now: ‘StressReleaseExercise’ and also we are offering our place to all kind of groups and this for free. One word more to the money aspect: We don’t deal with money, every thing we do is because it feels right, we don’t charge and we don’t pay. It really works! We get all what we need and more… A really exciting experience! You might ask now why there are not enough people interested to live permanently there? The main reason is, that we don’t offer concepts, not spiritual and not religious. There is no leader or guru or any kind of authority, that’s what people prefer, but we need people to take self-responsibility. We need people who are capable to let go of their established concepts and deal with reality how it shows up, whatever this might be and then respond in a free way, not just reacting out of their unconscious background or at least being able to observe their reactions. Most people who come here are bringing their well-established self-image and concepts with them and then they want confirmation for this. And this is not what we can give. We can give space to experience oneself, to work on oneself, etc. but not giving confirmation for whatever concepts and for sure not for spiritual ones! How many people came here and then wanted to convince us of their beautiful spiritual concepts! Oh boy! The last few months we went to a heavy experience with a kind of ‘troll’ who nearly destroyed all. Several people left and now there can happen a new beginning or it might be the end of my intention. The last few weeks I engaged myself in ‘answers.yahoo’ and I enjoyed it. I might continue writing here, but to do this I don’t need this place, I can do so from everywhere in the world. So I do this effort writing this ‘question’ with the hope that people will respond and so there might come several people together who will join us in our ‘crazy intention’, being in this world, reaching out to new horizons… BeiYin PS: If you are interested to read more about our place then go to: http://falconblanco.com "Please state a question precisely, and then we may be able to answer it accurately,” wrote Peter Christopher. Here you have some precise questions: How can I avoid that people, who come here and write beautiful email promising the best, turn out to be liars, thieves, pretender, neurotic, psychotic, etc.? How to avoid people having a highly sophisticated concept about every thing, but not being able to relate and respond to reality? How can I avoid, that if such people when it shows their true personality so that it becomes obvious that they are not possible here, but then these people don't want to leave and causing a lot of problems, how can I avoid that they show up here? How to avoid that when their expectation is not fulfilled, what hardly ever is possible, that they react angry and give all the fault to the place and me? How to avoid that people steal and take what they want without asking? How can I avoid that psychotic people try to kill me or threatening to destroy the place? What can I do with people who are not really interested in our intention and not asking any question? Where are the people who are interested and capable to take self-responsibility and doing what is necessary? People who understand that when one is interested in ones growth, that this needs a certain discipline, for example daily meditation, because it shows up that even they had written that they are doing regularly meditation, but being here they don't do it. What can I do to avoid people coming here and they know that we don't accept alcohol, tobacco and drugs are lying and when here doing it anyway? So that at the end hardly anybody is meditating, but all are smoking and drinking and just using the freedom and the abundance of food to survive in an easy way. What can I do with this place that can give living space and food with a minimum of work for more than twenty people? Are out there people who might be really interested? How can I reach them? And avoid pretender? Tell me! My questions: "Vision of sustainable living too far out? Thirty years of work for nothing? No real people out there to join?" I believe that these questions are pretty clear. I can make them more precise: Is my vision of a life style living together with people, helping and supporting each other and doing things not in the first place for money but because it feels right and is what needs to be done, - is this vision too far out? Is this vision unrealistic? It’s not for me because I am living this and it works. But obviously it’s unrealistic to expect that other people coming out of this society are capable to live this vision. Thirty years of experiencing this reality of people should be enough. I need to find out now what to do, if there is a possibility or not. That’s why I am doing the effort to write here; although it doesn’t look like that any answer will clear this question up. I need to know if there are ‘real people’ out there and what I can do to find them, - if they exist. Tamara, that's true, probably many people who might be interested and possible for an intention like FalconBlanco, don't have Internet because they live already a more simple life. But how can I reach these people? About twenty years ago when there was not yet Internet, I made anouncements in alternative magazines and there was a lot response from people who wanted to move from the city to the country. Quite a number of people came, but it was a disaster! There beautiful image of living in the nature was not enough and working on the land was far too hard for them. After 10 minutes they dropped the tool... But today it would be different, as I know how to check people before they come here. I can call them if they have telephone. I don't know yet how to make anouncements. Would it be possible that you or other people make an add in a magazine? (Of course I will pay) Also you could tell friends without Internet about our place and that we look for people. That would help! Thanks!! I made a page in 'MySpace' and also in Yahoo, but then i could not find out how to use pyzamp and select pimp my page as an option. Can somebody help me please, - - - I found the mistake why I couldn't find 'pyzamp' because there was a spelling mistake, the write place is: 'pyzam'! This one 'p' kept me busy for several hours! ... I found the mistake why I couldn't find 'pyzamp' because there was a spelling mistake, the right place is: 'pyzam'! This one 'p' kept me busy for several hours! ... I will close this question now. I realize now that it was not a good way I had ask and that probably is the reason for the lack of answers. I have ask a new question and there came several practical and useful answers. Thanks for your participation. Hasta luego... BeiYin
how can i show the architectural side of a power plant? I’m an architecture student and we are task to design an industrial building that is green (sustainable building), what comes to my mind is a solar power plant, but I don’t know how I’m going to start, I don’t know the space program for a power plant and I think designing an industrial building is more of engineering and does not show more of the architectural side...Still don’t have an idea how to start and how can I show the architectural side of it….hope you can help me.. Thanks in advance
Can't decide what to do at Uni!? Ok, so far i know that i want to go to university. at the moment i am looking at universities and looking at what courses they do, but i realised that i shouldnt choose the uni's i will apply to untill i actually decide on my course! i am thinking of either taking: sustainable/product design landscape architecture or an animal/geography related course such as ecology etc. i really do not know how to decide so if you have have ever been in this situation or have some advice i would love to hear from you. Many thanks.
Translation from English to Chinese? How would you translate 'sustainable design' in Chinese especially when you are talking about architecture? Please let me know the pingyin and accent marks. Thanks in advance!
Parsons The New School For Design Environmental Studies? Senior year is approaching, and college applications loom fairly heavily. I have a strong background in art and the humanities, as well as in environmental science, the second of which i have devoted volunteer work and a prestigious internship at a major museum. I would love to enter sustainable design or green architecture, as the field fascinates me as well as will probably present a wise career move as things begin to hit the fan as far as environmental responsibility goes (just look at the gulf). The downside is i'm not particularly good at math, and have never had much of a mind for numbers. So a degree in environmental studies would address my strengths in the humanities. Since parsons is a great design school, i was curious about their environmental studies program (science at an art school, seems perfect) though i couldn't find any reviews or opinions written by someone who has actually pursued that degree. Could anyone give me some input on their program, or perhaps suggest schools i would possibly find appealing? Thank you for your time

Could you add your suggestions for the crisis in Haiti? Dear Yahoo Friends… If this suggestion offends or runs counter to your beliefs, it was not intended to do so. It is simply thoughts put to paper…in search of solutions. If you would like to participate, add your suggestions. If you can take time to contact those who are in power and who can make a difference, here are some links. http://www.un.org/en/ http://www.un.org/en/contactus/ http://www.wikihow.com/Contact-the-President-of-the-United-States http://directory.usayfoundation.org/ - for governor, senators and representatives https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml - if you do not know who your representative is http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp - if you do not know the four digit extension for your zip code If you think this is absurd, please just pass this by. Please, no thumbs down for once. The situation in Haiti is being described as a humanitarian crisis. It is beyond that; it is a human tragedy that will only perpetuate unless radical measures are taken. There is simply no infrastructure in Haiti that can rebuild in a way that the populace can grow and thrive. Since the earthquake hit, my thought has been that the United Nations needs to get the best of the best from the fields of demolition and removal, architecture, government, hospital design and equipment, education, sustainable economy, roads, water support, and education (and the myriad of departments I have omitted) to go into Haiti, tear everything down, and start from scratch. Create manageable and safe neighborhoods and towns; buildings that are architecturally sound; “green” energy sources—the location is perfect, and teach how to govern. This is not nation building if done by the international community. It is creating a backdrop for possibility. It’s too late for these people? They have too many decades of poverty and graft? Never say never. You would be amazed what can be done when the heart is right and good minds work in concert. This morning on NPR one of the commentators said that Haiti can only rise the ashes if the international community intervenes. So there are obviously many among us billions who have conceptualized this intervention. Are you familiar with the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon? Any one of us could be that crucial hundredth one that creates the point of nuclear fission for human consciousness. http://www.spiritual-endeavors.org/peace/the-hund.htm Great answers all--from prayer to providing mother's milk to nursing infants. I checked out http://www.mercycorps.org/ and they look like a great organization. I gave to Unicef and Habitat for Humanity, but I will also donate to Mercy Corps. Former Presidents Clinton and Bush also appear to have an efficient means to getting aid to the people. I will send them something also. Thank you all. I think the suggestion that the international community declare Haiti a disaster area and rebuild is what offers longterm hope for the people of Haiti, so I will go with that answer for BA.
Would you offer critique on my paper on design? This is the beginning of a paper for school, I am to describe what influenced me to pursue the career I am pursuing and since starting school if I am still confident that I chose the right career. This is a rough rough draft, just looking for some opinions so far (I feel like it has no rhythm as of now...) The beats of hammers on a piece of wood and the crack of a bat to a ball are two sounds that will always take me back to my childhood. My father was a sales representative for a lumber company by day, and the founder of a baseball organization by night. It was almost inevitable that I grow up with a passion for one of the two. The baseball fields never did much for me. Unless there was a wooded area nearby, there was not much to explore and no place to wander. Empty half built houses, on the other hand, were full of imaginary wonders. When I was very young, I would create worlds inside these houses and with each new house that my father was overseeing, there was a new adventure as well. As I got older, I became more curious about the structure itself. I wanted to know everything. I wanted to know how it was being built, what was holding the roof up, how the staircase was installed. Fortunately, I had formed a relationship with some of the workers over the years, and a lot of them took the time to answer my questions and explain things to me. My inquisitiveness about the structure itself soon turned into wanting to know more about the interior. How would the family use this space? Why the architect designed specific rooms to be adjacent to certain other rooms and why some rooms were spaced further apart. When not at the construction sites, studying the blueprints my father would bring home with him became another favorite thing to do. I started becoming familiar with floor plans and eventually began trying to draw my own (though, with only graph paper and little knowledge of drafting, they were never to scale and only understood by me.) Now that I am school and learning the ins and outs of the design field, I am even more confident that I have chosen the right path. I struggled for a long time to choose one of my many passions to pursue as a career. I went back and forth for a very long time between Creative Writing, Photography, and Interior Design. I was very confused and put off returning to school for a long time because of my indecision. One day I realized, my poetry is always inspired by one of three things: architecture, humanity, and nature. My photography is also the same way, I do not find joy in posing people for portraits but leave me alone in a city for a day and I will return with a camera full of photos of people on the streets surrounded by beautiful architecture and natural wonders. Architecture, Humanity, and Nature. How could I possibly combine the three things that inspire me the most into one daily profession? Design is important to every aspect of our lives. A home’s functionality defines how the people in it live. By choosing sustainable products to use within the design, I can help protect our planet. Architecture, humanity, and nature are all closely interconnected and effect each other in intimate ways. As a designer, I can influence how they effect one another.
I need a good plot for a documentary on design. Any ideas? So this is for a school project. I'm filming a documentary about sustainable design and how design (product design and architecture mostly) will impact the future .However it's a bit dry - I only have a few shots about city life and a few interviews. What kind of storyline/journey will go well with this to make it more personal or interesting? I've come up with things like a talk show type format or a kid's show but nothing seems to stick.
I need good 30-minute films (documentary or short films) to show at work? I work for an architecture firm and I coordinate this half-hour program wherein I entertain the employees. I usually show documentaries that feature architects, or famous built work, and I am running out of ideas. I have shown the pbs' e2 series (a feature on sustainable projects around the world) and documentaries about frank gehry, renzo piano and some japanese architecture. It doesnt necessarily have to be about architecture, (but it's a plus) but it could be about art, culture or anything tasteful (I have to show it at work after all). Your ideas would be appreciated!
Where can I go to get paid to do my masters? I just graduated with a BSc. in Wood Products Processing with a minor in Commerce from the University of British Columbia. I am potentially looking at doing my masters degree, but I am not sure what in or where. If I do do it I need to be finances as I do not want to take on more student loans. I could follow through with a masters of wood science at UBC, or a masters of architecture somewhere, a masters of sustainable energy development at U of Calgary or a Uni in Ecuador OR some other option? I'm just trying to find out my options and figure out what to do....any help would be much appreciated. Note: I do not think it is very easy to get funding when studying a masters of architecture. I will likely be taking the following year off, working lightly and traveling as much as possible.
Did you know that..? "Twenty percent of the architecture on the World Heritage List today is constructed of earth"? http://www.eartharchitecture.org/index.php?/categories/36-Mali http://sociolingo.wordpress.com/category/culture/african-architecture/mud-buildings/ Should we completely move away from building in earth/ mud and take up cement instead. I don't know how widespread the use of sustainable cement has become but can't we explore more alternatives like building bigger and hig- accomodation buildings as an alternative to small huts? Yes you do owe me a mail jay. Thanks y'all.
Is the Obama administration laying the groundwork to abandon the dollar as the world's reserve currency? Geithner 'open' to China proposal Geithner, at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the U.S. is "open" to a headline-grabbing proposal by the governor of the China's central bank, which was widely reported as being a call for a new global currency to replace the dollar, but which Geithner described as more modest and "evolutionary." "We’re actually quite open to that suggestion – you should see it as rather evolutionary rather building on the current architecture rather than moving us to global monetary union," he said. "The only thing concrete I saw was expanding the use of the [special drawing rights]," Geithner said. "Anything he’s thinking about deserves some consideration." The continued use of the dollar as a reserve currency, he added, "depends..on how effective we are in the United States...at getting our fiscal system back to the point where people judge it as sustainable over time."
I'm thinking about moving to New Orleans, I'd like just some general info? I'm a bartender- what is it like finding a job? I'm coming from Portland, OR, once we have jobs here we hold onto them for dear life if we know what's good for us. (I'm sort of kidding) So, I'm a little worried about moving to another city but I've heard it's not as bad elsewhere. (assume I'm good at my job, personable, friendly, responsible, 10 years in restaurant customer service, good references, yada yada so on..) Any suggestions on places to check out? Do I need a certification? Here we have an OLCC license and food handler's card. What's the equivalent there that I need to look into? Can I do it online? What neighborhoods should I look in for a 1 bedroom or studio apartment in the $500-$800 a month range? (Yes, I like all the annoying things girls like in an apartment and make one hard to find at a price I can afford at times- cute, windows, nice details, really like the New Orleans architecture style i.e. cast iron railings, saw some loft bed area styles that were really interesting.) Is there a market for sustainable clothing/ textiles or for custom clothing/textiles? (Every bartender's got a story..) Thanks for your time and help!

Wld u vte BNP ova their policies,nd do u belive that the BNP are the only prty that cn save our British Cultr? IMMIGRATION - time to say ENOUGH! On current demographic trends, we, the native British people, will be an ethnic minority in our own country within sixty years. To ensure that this does not happen, and that the British people retain their homeland and identity, we call for an immediate halt to all further immigration, the immediate deportation of criminal and illegal immigrants, and the introduction of a system of voluntary resettlement whereby those immigrants who are legally here will be afforded the opportunity to return to their lands of ethnic origin assisted by a generous financial incentives both for individuals and for the countries in question. We will abolish the 'positive discrimination' schemes that have made white Britons second-class citizens. We will also clamp down on the flood of 'asylum seekers', all of whom are either bogus or can find refuge much nearer their home countries. EUROPE - back to British independence! We are opposed to the Single European Currency, and support the overwhelming majority of the British people in their desire to keep the Pound and our traditional weights and measures. At the same time, we are for the best possible relationship with our European neighbours and believe that the nations of Europe should be free to trade and cooperate whenever it is mutually beneficial, though without being forced into a political and economic straitjacket - political unification. Accordingly, we stand for British withdrawal from the European Union. In place of the EU, we intend to aim towards greater national self-sufficiency, and to work to restore Britain's family and trading ties with Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and to trade with the rest of the world as it suits us. Following our withdrawal from the EU, the BNP will use the £43 million per day net contribution Britain at present makes to the European Union to fund many far more useful projects at home. LAW AND ORDER - crack down on crime! The BNP will crack down on crime and restore public safety and confidence. We will free the police and courts from the politically correct straitjacket that is stopping them from doing their job properly. The liberal fixation with the 'rights' of criminals must be replaced by concern for the rights of victims, and the right of innocent people not to become victims. We support the re-introduction of corporal punishment for petty criminals and vandals, and the restoration of capital punishment for paedophiles, terrorists and murderers as an option for judges in cases where their guilt is proven beyond dispute, as by DNA evidence or being caught red-handed. ECONOMY - British workers first! Globalisation, with its export of jobs to the Third World, is bringing ruin and unemployment to British industries and the communities that depend on them. Accordingly, the BNP calls for the selective exclusion of foreign-made goods from British markets and the reduction of foreign imports. We will ensure that our manufactured goods are, wherever possible, produced in British factories, employing British workers. When this is done, unemployment in this country will be brought to an end, and secure, well-paid employment will flourish, at last getting our people back to work and ending the waste and injustice of having more than 4 million people in a hidden army of the unemployed concealed by Labour's statistical fiddles. We further believe that British industry, commerce, land and other economic and natural assets belong in the final analysis to the British nation and people. To that end we will restore our economy and land to British ownership. We also call for preference in the job market to be given to native Britons. We will take active steps to break up the socially, economically and politically damaging monopolies now being established by the supermarket giants. Finally we will seek to give British workers a stake in the success and prosperity of the enterprises whose profits their labour creates by encouraging worker shareholder and co-operative schemes. EDUCATION - discipline, standards, achievement! We are against the 'trendy' teaching methods that have made Britain one of the most poorly educated nations in Europe. We will end the practice of politically correct indoctrination in all its guises and we will restore discipline in the classroom, give authority back to teachers and put far greater emphasis on training young people in the industrial and technological skills necessary in the modern world. We will also seek to instill in our young people knowledge of and pride in the history, cultures and heritage of the native peoples of Britain. AGRICULTURE - quality before quantity! We see a strong, healthy agriculture sector as vital to the country. Britain's farming industry will be encouraged to produce a much greater part of the nation's need in food products. Priority will be switched from quantity to quality, as we move from competing in a global economy to maximum self-sufficiency for Britain. We will ensure a major shift to healthier and more sustainable organic farming. We are pledged to ensure the restoration of Britain's once great fishing industry with the reimposition of the former exclusion zones around our coast. HEALTH - first-class healthcare for all! We are wholly committed to a free, fully funded National Health Service for all British citizens. We will revitalise the Health Service by boosting staff and bed numbers, slashing unnecessary bureaucracy and by addressing the root cause of low recruitment and retention - low pay. We will see to it that no money is given in foreign aid while our own hospitals are short of beds and the staff to run them. More emphasis must be placed on healthy living with greater understanding of sickness prevention through physical exercise, a healthier environment and improved diets. TRANSPORT - time to invest! Increased investment is needed in Britain's public transport system to bring it up to the highest standards in the world. The fiasco of rail privatisation with different companies running services and track leading to higher fares and lower safety also needs to be resolved. Congestion of our towns and cities must be eased by the provision of greater incentives to use rail and bus transport instead of private cars. The first step is to end the crime and squalor that puts so many people off public transport. Motorists must not be made the scapegoats for government failure. Fuel tax should be cut, motorway speed limits raised, and hidden speed cameras should be banned. Far more must be done to encourage the development and use of cleaner fuels. ENVIRONMENT - a cleaner, greener future! Our ideal for Britain is that of a clean, beautiful country, free of pollution in all its forms. We will enforce standards to curb those practices, whether by business or the individual, which cause environmental damage. "The polluter pays to clean up the mess" must become a fact of life, not an electioneering slogan. In towns we would work to replace the brutalist modernism of 1960s-style-architecture with a blend of traditional local styles and materials and ensure that developments take place on a more human scale. FOREIGN AID - time to spend our money on our own people! We reject the idea that Britain must forever be obliged to subsidise the incompetence and corruption of Third World states by supplying them with financial aid. We will link foreign aid with our voluntary resettlement policy, whereby those nations taking significant numbers of people back to their homelands will need cash to help absorb those returning. The billions of pounds saved every year by this policy will also be reallocated to vital services in Britain. PENSIONERS - pensioners before asylum seekers! The conditions in which many of Britain's old people are forced to live are a national disgrace. We are pledged to ensure that all our old folk are able to live in comfortable homes, and will restore the earnings link with pensions. Elderly people who have paid a lifetime of taxes and reared families should not have to sell their homes to pay for care. NORTHERN IRELAND - an end to sectarianism! Britain has shamefully allowed the terrorists in N.I. to come close to winning when the IRA could have been destroyed years ago. Government weakness has led to hundreds of deaths and given those same terrorists a share in government. We would end all attempts to force the people of Northern Ireland to accept foreign interference in their affairs and deal with terrorism - from whatever side - once and for all. No one with links to a terrorist organisation that refuses to lay down its arms should be allowed to enter government. We would abolish state-supported segregation in education. In the long run, we wish to end the conflict in Ireland by welcoming Eire as well as Ulster as equal partners in a federation of the nations of the British Isles. DEFENCE - no more cuts! Successive cuts in defence spending have left Britain's armed forces perilously weak. We will boost Britain's armed forces to ensure that they are able to deal with any emergency, and defend our homeland and our independence. We will bring our troops back from Germany and withdraw from NATO, since recent political developments make both commitments obsolete. We will close all foreign military bases on British soil, and refuse to risk British lives in meddling 'peace-keeping' missions in parts of the world where no British interests are at stake - a position of armed neutrality. We will also restore national service for our young with the option of civil or military service. FOREIGN AFFAIRS - Britain's interests first! Britain's foreign relations should be determined by the protection of our own national interest and not by our like or dislike of other nations' internal politics. We would have no quarrel with any nation that does not threaten British interests. We will maintain an independent foreign policy of our own, and not a spineless subservience to the USA, the 'international community', or any other country. DEMOCRACY - letting the people decide! The British people invented modern Parliamentary democracy. Yet in recent years the British people have been denied their democratic rights. On issue after issue, the views of the majority of British people have been ignored and overridden by a Politically Correct 'élite' which thinks it knows best. On immigration, on Capital Punishment, on the surrender of British sovereignty to the EU and in numerous other areas, democracy has been absent as Labour, Tories and Lib-Dems conspire in election after election to offer the British people no real choice on such vital issues. The BNP exists to give the British people, that choice, and thus to restore and defend the basic democratic rights we have all been denied. We favour more democracy, not less, not just at national but at regional and local level. Power should be devolved to the lowest level possible so that local communities can make decisions which affect them. We will remove legal curbs on freedom of speech imposed by successive Governments over the last 40 years. We will implement a Bill of Rights guaranteeing fundamental freedoms to the British people. We will ensure that ordinary British people have real democratic power over their own lives and that Government, local and national, is truly accountable to the people who sorry for the first paragraph but i had to write it in a bit of a text language because they only give me so many letters for the opening question also the rest is the BNP policies i cut it and paste it off theyr website agains sorry about the spelling in the question also one more thing this is a question of a matter of your opinions, and only your opinions
How can "Burning Trees in power stations" be 'Green'"? Heard a bloke on "Weakest Link" describing his job as "Green" and "Sustainable" - he chops down forests, and the trees are burnt in power stations! If his misunderstanding wasn't so almightily awful + sad, I would have laughed... 1) We need MATURE trees - each and every one... We need a rich, FREE oxygen supply... The alarming rate of Deforestation... 2) Burning omits CO2... If this is the state of current "expert" intelligence, gawd help us! (More info. re: Deforestation: Please see FREE pdf download on my website: http://www.the-alternative.org.uk Chapter 3: Architecture / Destruction of Forests - use 'Bookmarks' to find). Kenny B: Uh? Get out of here! Soon there'll be nothing left! Rogues and scoundrels will have taken everything! Except the gas, of course! To you guys trees are only there for you to abuse - they're not living things, who deserve to live, and grow, to be beautiful things. Note: There's hardly any ancient woodland left to decimate but there are yet more foul schemes afoot... If you don't burn the trees, they absorb more CO2, yes? We need to lessen CO2, yes?
What deal with this New World Order conspiracy / it kinda makes sense thing? When I think about my future I think go to college, get a job, reproduce die. But when I think about the future of humanity I cannot even use words to describe what is to come. Humanity's problems involve starvation to resource depletion to many many environment concerns. I feel as if though a new world order is inevitable. My view is that one of two things will happen we will organize ourselves into small sustainable happy communities and tribes or we will riot and those of us who get arrested will work in labor camps and those of us who don't will live in under a 1984 style world government which is currently organizing all of us people like little ants to work in the most efficient way always under surviellance and if the rules are broken you get to work in the acid mines. I feel as if these conspiracy people are right about the fact there are going to be new blue prints for the architecture of humanity (a more global totalitarian ants working for the queen) how does everybody feel about this
I can't choose between civil engineering and architecture majors.? I'm good in math, physics, and i love to draw and design. I also want to help the environment and society make its change to sustainable living in the near future. But, I have a problem choosing my major, which I narrowed down to Civil Engineering and Architecture. I would want to be either a civil engineer or an architect. What are the pros and cons of each major/career? If you are majoring in, have career in, or have any interest in these two, please answer. I know its not all about the money, but I was wondering what is the salaries is in these two careers.
So I do this effort writing this ‘question’ with the hope that people will respond and so there might come several people together who will join us in our ‘crazy intention’, being in this world, reaching out to new horizons… BeiYin PS: If you are interested to read more about our place then go to: http://falconblanco.com
The environment and the arts, is there a career for me? I am entering my junior year at Cardozo high school in New York, and the impending pressure to choose a career path and gear yourself towards it is becoming more and more involved in my life. i have many interests, and have at some point wanted to pursue a career in each of them. Some of my more lifelong interests were in visual arts and ecology/sciences dealing with animals and the environment. i also have a talent for history and English, my only weak points being mathematics. Is there a specific career out there that combines the aspects of design and ecology? i know sustainable eco-practices will be a rapidly evolving field in the coming years with the pressure on oil, and the need to find ways for the public to live in a manner that doesn't have as great of an impact on the earth and its resources, but the question is what can do to help that process along? i volunteer at a local environmental center, and i am taking several AP courses next year, one of which is environmental science, i also took pre-portfolio art with the intent on going into advanced portfolio, but the program was sadly cut.I have thought about pursuing green architecture, but my mathematical Achilles heel would be an issue. I'm not expecting to find my life's work in yahoo answers, but I'm just fishing for something to think about. Also, if you can, please include a college that you would recommend for pursuing such a future, preferably in the New York area, but it doesn't have to be. Thank you very much for your time.
How to become a sustainable architect if you already have a BS in Biology? I am thinking about going to graduate school for some sort of sustainable design, architecture, or construction, however I do not want to have to repeat undergrad to get an architecture degree. How can I get into this field without repeating undergraduate work?
