I realice that I liked it a lot but I don't have the specific knoledge and experience to start a landscape and gardening design business. Will a diploma from Ashworth College's online program in Landscape Design get me into a job in the field? I've been thinking seriously for a while now about taking classes, or working toward a degree, in Landscape or Garden Design. I found this one, which suits my budget and current time limitations (just had a baby) but don't want to do it if it'll only get me laughed at when I start looking for work in the field. I'd be happy starting out anywhere from a garden supply store/greenhouse/nursery, or at a landscape design company.

Landscape/garden design client horrors. Convincing client what they want is awful? Three years ago I was hired to landscape a gravelly, weedy front yard zone 6b,into something that would enhance the property/house. Client liked the idea of eliminating the lost-cause "lawn", wanted flowering plants, a sitting area. I designed a plan, installed or had installed most of it (would have been 100% but for her not providing suff.$$) and have done maintenance. AFTER having spent many weeks on design work, plant selection, hardscape materials and having mostly completed everything she began slyly expressing dissatisfaction such as mentioning how she has always loved Hydrangeas (macrophylla), Delphimiums, Oriental Poppies, huge tall billowy things, "being surrounded by things she loves" which included hideous plants (chrome yellow coreopsis and others) which clash with the house both in flower and foliage. The house is a very pale tone of dull yellow green, looks almost gray/green, faces directly South and gets full sun dawn to sunset. It is directly across from the ocean and is windswept. The plants I chose were creeping thyme, fine textured artemesias, echinacias, lavenders, sedums, sempervivums, achillea, liatris, helictotrichon, dwarf Japanese black pine, small horizontal junipers cedars, a few winter-blooming heaths, and others. About 60% of the flowers are in the pale-med red/violet family with others pale-med violet or blue and a few butter yellow. Predominant foliage colors are grayish green, deep green, blue-green with about 10% burgundy foliage. Most are very short plants with talls placed around the perimeter and in a couple other places for accent. The yard is small, 20dx35w. The entire yard is an excellent design and the plants are all perfect with each other and with the house and hardscape. Now she is on again about Hydrangeas, Delphimiums (which get eaten by snails + need to be staked), other very tall plants, brilliant yellow, AND "small" tree (exactly in the center of the lot, too). How do you convince someone that a front yard is about the house, its style/color/shape, about the location, about what can thrive there and look good and not about "being surrounded by things she loves". If she fills the yard up with all these things she loves it will be more hideous than when I began work. How do you cope with a design client who does not understand design or plants? Is it better to drop the client and lose the money than cope with the excruciating frustration?
garden center business vs. landscape design business? I am thinking about starting an organic garden center business. I do not have any experience with retail. Another option that I am considering is to become a landscape designer. It seems like going the landscape designer route would be less risky than entering the retail world, but I have to say I am drawn to the garden center business. Any ideas, advice? What should I consider before making my decision? Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. I would like to add that I feel fairly confident as far as gardening is concerned. I am planning on taking classes on landscape design.

What is a good name for a garden design company? I am starting a company to help people design and refresh their gardens and landscapes. My services will include planning out their garden, helping them select plants at the nursery, and then helping them keep their yard green and healthy. I need to design the landscape of a small back yard. Any tips? I see a lot of books on designing large gardens, but we live in California and have a very small back yard that we'd like to liven up (right now it's just mulch). Is it worth hiring a contractor? Landscape design/architecture? I've always been interested in gardens/landscape/flowers/ trees, etc. I want to make designing/beautifying gardens my hobby. I am just starting out and I have a lot to learn... There are 2 parts to my question: --What's the difference between landscape design and landscape architecture? --Do I need to become a plant expert? For example, if I am planning a section of a garden and I want a tree that has beautiful large pink flowers, should I be expected to list the names of all trees that match this description? (i.e. the magnolia tree). Do I need to become knowledgeable of the life cycles of all different types of plants and what specifically needs to be done to take care of them (i.e. know that X plant needs a lot of sunlight and a lot of water, while Y plant grows well in clay soil, etc)? Can anyone recommend a company in Glasgow who do mono blocking and/or garden design? I'm looking for a company near Glasgow to do our driveway and I was going to go with mono block. What should I be asking these companies so I don't get ripped off? Also we want to landscape our back garden which has a steep downwards slope. We thought decking straight out over it was the best solution. Any other ideas? We would need to put up an 8ft fence if we go for decking. Do you need planning permission for that? Landscape Design? I just started landscaping design for my first client. I live in Silicon Valley, CA. I charge $35 per hour to my client. My friend who is a also landscaping designer, charges $85-120 per hour after 1 year experience. I am wondering how much would you pay for your garden design? Landscape Design, Landscape services? Which do I need? I bought a house that hasn't had any landscaping done to it at all. Unless you count overgrown bushes, weeds, and the neighbors bushes encroaching in my yard. I want to get a flower garden started next spring. I have a guy who will cut the bushes and weeds for me. He could do tilling if I need it or i can. But it's the garden design I need help with. I'm not sure what flowers and plants would work best in my yard and I'm not that good at color design and design ideas. But I don't necessarily need someone to do all the planting for me. I just need to know What to plant Where and When. Like a "Paint-By-Numbers" design for my garden. Is this the type of service a landscape designer would do? Or a landscape service? If not them, then who would be able to do something like this? And how much done something like that cost (ballpark)? Helkp with description of landscaping/ planting / garden design project...? i am completing my entry for the 2009 BALI a wards and am trying to write a description for our entry but am struggling a little. the project was carried out in the garden of a townhouse property and comprises of a raised patio area with raised, rendered planters around the raised patio with integrated seating. Best way to edit/design digital garden pictures on a laptop?? I am a landscape gardener, and I am looking for some way to take pictures of a clients garden, upload them to my laptop then sit with the client and re-design the pictures with input from the client. Possibly a graphics tablet? photoshop? touch sensitive screen ? so I can draw straight onto the digital images. It would be good if there was a package available that provided different options of pre made objects such as fencing, block paving, turf, decking, shrubs which could be placed onto the photograph to show what the finished garden would look like. I have seen a kitchen designer use something similar where he took a picture of the clients kitchen, then showed her what it would look like with the new kitchen fitted. Any ideas Thanks

how do I get a job in a field I don't have any work experience in? I've done mostly customer service & do NOT want to do it anymore. While I understand the majority of jobs do have some level of customer service, I am looking for something that isn't predominantly CS. I really want to do Landscape & Garden Design, however I don't have a degree. I've posted my resume on 6 different job search sites & keep getting hits for CS, even though I put a cover letter up saying that's not what I'm looking for. I've been out of work for almost 3 months now & am getting very frustrated. Any ideas? Oh! I can't do Landscape Laborer due to previous physical injuries, so that makes it more difficult.

I need a good landscape design!? We have a split level home and I want to plant flowers in the areas below the upper windows (also in front of the lower windows). I'm new at this stuff and inexperienced in what to do. The left side is a half circle about 12x15, and the right side is a long rectangle about 3x12. I was thinking flowers on the left side and 3-4 flower bushes on the right side. Or should I do flowers on both? Does anyone know of a place where I can design it or can you help me? I'd like to do a 3-season garden but have no clue where to put what. How do I make it so something is always in bloom? (minus winter of course). Any help would be great, thanks!
idea for gathering new landscape design clients/business? I currently own a landscape design/maintenance business and am looking for a better niche during these hard times. I have developed an idea and am looking for some feedback on the idea. ( I am not looking for new ideas, just feedback). I want to appeal to those in downtown and more historical urban settings, usually with very minimal yard space. Many of my clients live in lofts and have roof top gardens rather than usual yards. I create retreats geared to the individual clients personality and needs. I also create spaces in small areas that clients never thought was possible. Another unique thing that I do is bring the inside out (living spaces, outdoor kitchens, sometimes outdoor showers) and the outside in (water features, plant displays, green environments, and fresh floral arrangements). So I would love to gather some feedback on market acceptance, and what people think of my ideas. My goal of this is to get people to spend time in their 'space'. Considering it is hard for most of us to go out and do things all the time in this economy, I want people to feel relaxed and away from their everyday stressful lives in their own home, yard, roof, or loft patio, without having to leave and go elsewhere to receive this enjoyment. The reason for me wanting some feedback is I would like to get an additional loan for advertising and marketing purposes, so I need a little bit of research to back me up, any feedback is welcome. Landscape design question...? How do I create visual depth with only a 2' wide planting area? More Information: The wall is 50' long and runs a long my pond. The top of the wall is chainlink fence the bottom is grey block. I want to block out my neighbor's house which is big, close by and orange :s. I am creating a Japanese inspired garden. So I would be using plants like podocarpus, hydrangea vine and evergreen wisteria vine. I am open to any plant suggestions as well. If I plant a few different things along the wall (different colors/textures) would it help to break it up? I only have 2 feet of planting area between the pond and wall. I am hoping to make it look like the edge of a forest. I would love to use clumping bamboo but its to close to the pond liner and I am afraid it would pierce the liner. Also 2' wide is not enough space for a clumper, as far as I know.

How can I design the best landscape for south florida backyard? I have about 1/4 acre of yard at my south florida home. We have chain-link fences all around, with the back of our property on a canal. I would love to have a place for the kids to play, a vegetable garden and a butterfly garden. And I would like to limit the amount of grass - but there is sooo much to do. Where should I start? I don't have the money to hire someone and want to do it in stages, but work out the overall plan before I start anything. Anyone have any ideas on how to start? Pictures from Garden. Pool, and Landscaping Books: Can You Help? I was looking at books and Barnes and Noble and there were a few pictures I liked but that was the only thing I liked in the whole book. So I was hoping you guys could help me out by either scanning the pictures from your books and emailing them to me or by giving me link to a website where they are. Starting a landscape consulting business: What do homeowers want to know about their landscapes? I'm a horticulturist with 10 years of experience working on all type of properties ranging from small homes to 1st class museum collections. I want to share my expertise by working with property owners to help upgrade and maintain their landscapes. I currently write a newsletter that covers seasonal maintenance tasks, pest and disease issues, and design ideas. I'd like to be doing evaluations of existing landscapes, quality checks on new installations (you'd be surprised at how many things can go wrong!), and teach gardening classes. I don't want to be acting as a contractor, rather be working as a referer or liaison between my clients and landscapers. I want to be a client's advocate, not a servicemagic.com paid referal service where landscapers pay for leads or give kickbacks. I'm open to all any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Can anyone recommend a good source of information for a beginning gardener? I want to start planning now for a permaculture landscape design for my yard next spring. From what I've read about permaculture, it sounds like a great concept, but I'm overwhelmed by ph levels, companion planting, planting seeds in hills, blah, blah, blah! I need to do this as frugally as possible and want to do some container gardening to avoid weeds. I want to plant the front and back yards and have it be both attractive and productive. Any advice? Could I become a landscape designer with a major in Agriculture Business and minor in Horticulture? I have wanted to be a landscape designer for a long time. I had to go to the most affordable school in my state though. This school does not offer Landscape design or anything like that. I asked the school if I would be able to become a landscape designer with major: Agri Business / minor: Horticulture. I do have a work study job with the schools master gardener who also designs the landscapes on campus. I am getting a lot of experience working with her that I can add to what I already know about landscaping. I have also been drawing landscape designs for fun since I was in high school and gardening since I was real little. I have a lot of experience with plants and I know a lot about plants. This is the only school that I can got to so I hope this major and minor will help me. Thanks to all who take the time to read this and answer. I also want to own my own nursery.

Landscape Architecture Works in Japan? I am in Japan for a few weeks. I used to live here so I have seen the Kyoto gardens and the usual Japanese garden stuff. However, I am now a student in landscape architecture and I would like to explore more of the contemporary/recent designs here in Japan. Could we afford to buy land for £16,000 and build a posh property on it? We're a small family, all with average wages. I myself am a full time student who also works part time at a call centre, my mum is a supermarket supervisor and her fiancé runs his own landscape gardening business. My grandfather is also a builder. We have been offered a several acre piece of land by a farmer in a fantastic area where large, expensive houses tend to be built, for £16,000. It seems an absolute bargain. This is a new venture for us, and we're unsure of whether to go for it, how much it would cost us, if we could afford it, and what we would need to do. Can anyone advise us if we could afford to create this project, based on our typical family wages. We could design, and possibly build a house without too much bother based on experience. But is this project worthy? What would be the process? Hope you can help us! Thanks!

How does someone become an expert on Gardening, get certified and make it a career? I am interested in turning my small time hobby of gardening into a bit of a career. Are there classes, certifications, training that I can take in order to become an expert on plants, trees, etc?
