Modern Residential Architecture Knowledge Base

Modern Residential Architecture...What is your opinion? Do urban planners have no flare anymore like the Victorians did? Why are most new build developments a labyrinth of dull flimsy looking clones. I don't mean the master pieces of Richard Rogers etc but the ghastly modern estates mushrooming up all over the country. Will people look back in 100 years time and cringe at this period of design with the same contempt as they do now at the horrid 60's high rise apartment blocks ? Why can't we build magnificent solid white pillared terraced mansions anymore with a modern twist. Is creative brickwork, tall ceilings a thing of the past? Surely it cannot always be down to cost and being green ?
Why was "modern architecture" never accepted by the masses? Despite the zeal of most Architects to promote modern architecture for the last 80 years it is clear that most people do not accept it and instead cling to traditional forms of building. If one looks at residential construction in the US I would say that over 99% of new houses can be classified as traditional.
Any Good websites links for INDIA modern home plan design/architecture? Hi, any GOOD website URL to look at INDIA (Gujarat)'s modern home design/plan/architecture(inside and outside) for 150 sq. feet residential plot? Thanks.
How to develop my own style? So I am a 14 Year Old aspiring to be an Architect. Lately, I have been trying to find and/or develop my own style. I am into Residential Architecture mainly, and am a fan of the Modern/Ultra-Modern Architecture. My roles models include Frank Lloyd Wright and Steve Ehrlich. How can I develop my own style?
How expensive it is to raise and flatten a residential roof? I am considering the purchase of my first house. I am a mid-century modern architecture junkie and this house is a gabled-roof ranch home. The roof is about 10 feet at the ridge line and 8 feet at the exterior walls. I want to remodel the home and convert the existing roof to a flat roof, 12' high in the public areas of the house and 10' in the bedroom wing. The home is about 2,000 sf (figure 700 sf to be 12'). It has a slab on grade foundation and is entire wood frame. The lot is perfectly flat. How much will it cost to raise the roof and consequently raise all the exterior walls?

Located strategically on Sheikh Zayed Road, my house is situated in close proximity to some of Dubai's famous sports, leisure and recreational facilities including Emirates Golf Club, The Montgomerie and several luxury beach resorts. Prestigious landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab and the eighth wonder of the world, the Palm Jumeirah, are minutes away. Indigo colored glass, aluminum and white steel are combined to form an outstanding and unique concept in modern architecture. The roof and a majority of the outside of the tower is covered in solar panels, which supplies more than 50% of the building's electricity needs. Soaring to an impressive 35 floors, my house rises majestically in the midst of an idyllic setting of tranquil waters and lush green lawns. The ground floor features appealing cafes and shops to entice tenants and visitors while manicured lawns, lakes and boulevards coalesce to ensure working in Indigo Icon is a delightful and productive experience. My house rises a magnificent 35-stories and is set among lush, green lawns and sparkling waterways; the perfect surroundings in which to conduct business. The residential part of the tower comprises 272 apartments in a combination of spacious studios, one, two, three-bedroom apartments, and duplex penthouses. Fully air-conditioned, the interior finishes are of the highest standard. Large balconies and terraces offer breathtaking views overlooking the picturesque lakes and wide expanses of lush greenery to the south and the Arabian Gulf and new Marina development to the north. The commercial part of the tower comprises 68 offices over 8 floors. The residential and commercial floors have separate entrances, ensuring residents have total privacy. This spectacular development offers impressive shopping and dining on the ground floor. Coffee shops look out onto landscaped gardens, all within a secure and peaceful community. There's even an entertainment center, library, and a game room. The living room and den have sofa sets, coffee tables, and TVs. The dining room has a very long table in it and has a red oak floor. The kitchen also has red oak floors, and it has all the high tech appliances in it. My bed room is very colorful and the walls are covered with various posters. My library is fairly small, but it has many books in it. THANKS!!
I would like to design and build my home. What kind of income would this entail? Ever since I've taken an interest in residential architecture, I've been picky about home designs, and figured the best way to go would be to have a self-designed home somewhere in my future time line. I'm thinking of a dome house of sorts: Eco-friendly and off-beat. As well as trying to implement technologies such as radiant floor heating, photovoltaic arrays (solar panels), and a centralized computer automation/energy management/home theatre system. Pretty much just an elegant, modern, unique home implementing energy-saving and money-saving ideas. What kind of income and payment would self-built homes entail? Considering I'm going into engineering, would a $70-100k salary allow me to pursue this dream? Would a significant portion of the home value need to already be saved ahead of time? You don't have to answer all of these, just whatever you feel you know. Ah, location. Certainly not California. I was thinking: >In the plains outside Chicago >The mountains in Colorado >Texas because i lake a more arid climate >Stay with my German roots and my family and keep to the Midwest.
Where can I find free used magazines...? I am looking for anything related to architect, house designs, house plans, wood projects, home designing magazines or books. I can not afford subcriptions and I would love to take old to new magazines/books in good condition for my interest, but where can I find them? I tried posting on Craigslist, and no luck Some of the magazines that I am interested are: Architectural Digest Dwell Residential Architect Fine Homebuilding Custom Home Remodeling Interior Design Architecture Week Architecture House Beautiful This Old House Fine Woodworking I am also looking for any books including house plans, style of homes, modern buildings, styles of architecture and more. I also perfers bigger lots of magazines/books to make it worth the trip. I mean where can I find it, and take a lot of magazines, that will be mine to keep, not return the magazines to the libary or somewhere else...
Does a dream spot like this exist? I am NOT looking to purchase a house or land; once I have a general idea of location with your help, I would simply want to rent a room in a cottage or cabin surrounded by lush greenery (A) beside a lake backdropped by mountains (B) approximately 30 minutes driving distance to a town/city (C) 1-1.5 hour drive to a ski area (D) not particular about weather, so long as the place gets a healthy amount of sunshine (this is why I no longer am considering Portland or Seattle). This place can be absolutely anywhere in the US. To narrow down which city I'd like to be close to... I always find myself in awe of architecture found in European cities, NOT a fan of modern buildings/skyscrapers (have lived in San Francisco, Honolulu, visited NYC). The only big city I could think of having the look & feel of a European city is Boston, however, apparently a lake or mountain isn't anywhere within a 30 min driving distance. So, I was wondering if maybe someone knows of any European-like towns or cities within 30 minutes of my above lake/mountain/lush greenery description? As long as it is a decent size with some cafes, bookstores, museums... I'd be good to go. I'd really like to emphasize I am NOT seeking to live in a residential area on a lakeshore with tons of neighbors and a handful of trees with a shopping center around the corner. I really want to feel that I'm living in nature, yet have the ability to drive in to the city/town for employment and socializing. Thanks in advance for reading and all your suggestions are very much appreciated.

Would someone edit my essay? I need it a bit longer.? At noon on April 22, 1889, cannons resounded at a 2-million acre (8,000 km²) section of Indian Territory, launching president Benjamin Harrison's "Hoss Race" or Land Run of 1889. During the next six hours, about 10,000 people settled in what became the capital of the new Territory of Oklahoma: Guthrie. Within months, Guthrie became a modern brick and stone "Queen of the Prairie" with municipal water, electricity, a mass transit system, and underground parking garages for horses and carriages. Hobart Johnstone Whitley, also known as HJ and the Father of Hollywood, built the first brick block building in the territory for the National Loan & Trust Company. He was asked by the local people to be the first Governor of Oklahoma. Whitley traveled to Washington, D.C. where he persuaded the U.S. Congress to allow Guthrie to be the new capital of the state of Oklahoma. By 1907, when Guthrie became the capital, it looked like a well established Eastern city. Statehood, however, meant that political control moved from the national level to state government. Without the protective arm of the federal government. three years later Guthrie fought and lost its battle to retain the capital. In the middle of the night, on June 11, 1910, the state seal was moved to Oklahoma City, and along with it, Guthrie's entire economic base. Guthrie soon slipped into an economic sleep lasting seventy years. Guthrie prospered briefly as the administrative center of the territory, but was eclipsed in economic influence by Oklahoma City early in the 20th century. Oklahoma City had managed to become a major junction for several railroads and had attracted a major industry in the form of meat packing. A successful campaign was started by Oklahoma City business leaders after statehood to make Oklahoma City the new state capital, and it was moved in 1910. As a result of the sudden loss of its administrative function, Guthrie began to dwindle in size and soon lost its status as Oklahoma's second largest city, first to Muskogee, then later to Tulsa. Guthrie was named for John Guthrie of Topeka, a Kansas jurist. Guthrie post office was established April 4, 1889.[3]Guthrie was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service in 19. The happy result of Guthrie's misfortune is that the city is a perfectly preserved Victorian enclave. While growth and poor urban planning caused other Oklahoma towns such as Oklahoma City to destroy much of their early downtown architecture, much of the entire central business and residential district of Guthrie is totally intact. Guthrie is the largest urban Historic district in the United States, containing 2,169 buildings, 1,400 acres (6 km2) and 400 city blocks. Historical tourism has become the new industry for the town. Guthrie is home to several museums, including the Oklahoma Territorial Museum, as well as the National 4-String Banjo Hall of Fame and the Guthrie Scottish Rite Masonic Temple. Guthrie also claims to be the "Bed and Breakfast capital of Oklahoma". Guthrie is a Certified City and has received a Community Development Block Grant to inventory infrastructure features for Capital Improvement Planning (CIP). Guthrie has two lakes south of it called Liberty Lake and Guthrie Lake. The city hosts the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival, which draws 15,000 visitors annually. Guthrie is also the home to Oklahoma's oldest year-round professional theatre company, the Pollard Theatre Company. With an emphasis on creative story-telling that illuminates the shared human experience, the Pollard produces six or more plays and musicals annually, enlisting the talents of skilled artists from all across the country. Through its season of diverse theatrical fare which includes A Territorial Christmas Carol, the annual holiday favorite, the Pollard Company continues to set the standard for theatrical production in the Sooner state. Its about Guthrie btw. I'll give you really good ratings from time to time if you help me out on this.
