Landscape Architecture Knowledge Base
Landscape Architecture? I'm currently a student in a rather prestigious university (Purdue), majoring in Landscape Architecture. I'm only a freshman, but I like it a lot. The undergraduate program in LA is well recognized (ranked in the top 10 in LA by Design Intelligence). The only problem is that I don't know if the profession is all that it is hyped up to be. Any insight on this would be helpful. I'm also thinking about Business Construction Management, which is another program here that I am considering. My current academic GPA is a 3.0, if this helps.
How is architecture and landscape architecture different? I know architects work with buildings/structures and landscape architects focus more on landscape and ecological rehabilitation, but in terms of design and education, how different are they? I am looking to do an MLA (masters - landscape architecture) and was wondering if you work with sketches and models like you do in architecture. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated!
How much math is required for landscape architecture? People say that architecture in general requires a lot of math. This makes sense, but I was wondering what kinds of/how many college math classes you are required to take for landscape architecture and how it compares to architecture.

And what classes would you recommend I take/look into in order to prepare myself for any Landscape Architecture program? Thank you!

The university in general has not a good position in Good University Guide ranking (101/114) but I thought maybe I can ignore that because the course is accredited by UK landscape institute. How hard is Landscape Architecture? As in Landscape Architecture school. UofO specifically. is it a hard major with lots of maths and science or would an artistic person do well?
Which are the best landscape architecture courses in the U.K? I have had offers from Edinburgh College of Art, Manchester Metropolitan, Leeds Metropolitan, Kingston and Sheffield University. I am interested in conservation and the ecology/landscape architecture course at Sheffield has excellent teaching marks etc. The course in Edinburgh is only landscape architecture but I love the idea of living in Edinburgh. How do these 2 universities compare? What are the students like? Which has the best reputation and higher standard course/facilities?

What is the difference between architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning? I'm applying for the CAP program at Ball State (Muncie, IN), and although I don't need to know until my sophomore year which one I want to major in, I still want to have an idea. I honestly am interested in all three, but I obviously need to choose one. Is there anyone who has more information/details about each, or a specific one? Any one with experience or knowledge on the topics. I'd appreciate it.
What is good online school to start a landscape architecture degree? I am working full-time during the day with a landscaping company, therefore I need to either do night classes or online classes. I realize eventually i will need to hands on learning, but for now I know I need just my core classes, so I need to know what kind of online school is good to start at and have my credits transfer to a good landscap architechture school. I am in Washington state but will be moving to VA in about 2 years.
Landscape Architecture Works in Japan? I am in Japan for a few weeks. I used to live here so I have seen the Kyoto gardens and the usual Japanese garden stuff. However, I am now a student in landscape architecture and I would like to explore more of the contemporary/recent designs here in Japan. Does anyone know of any designed specifically by lanscape architects or land artists in the Tokyo, Saitama, or Kyushu areas?

Do you have to be a great artist to get a Masters of Landscape Architecture? I am going to be graduating with a Bachelors degree (geography) at the end of the year and I am interested in pursuing a M.L.A. Although I have no design experience, I feel that I have the drive, and creativity to succeed in the field. My problem is that I can not draw. I've never had to draw in my undergraduate classes. Will this hinder me? Also many schools ask for a portfolio with your application, and since my degree is in geography, I have nothing that could go in a portfolio of work. Could anyone clear these things up for me? PS: I can make a mean model, just dont ask me to draw anything.
Is Landscape Architecture easier than regular Architecture? I've considered doing an Artistic major and Pre-med. I wanted to do, but I can only sketch and draw, but not paint. Would Landscape Architecture be any better than an Art major? Actually, is Architecture a subject for an Artistic student?
english degree vs landscape architecture? I am going to be a senior in the fall with a degree in english and have realised that their is no job that I would actually want to do once I have graduated. I used to want to be an architect especially landscape architecture should I get a dual degree in english and landscape architecture, try to get into a master's architecture program, or not do architecture at all?

change major to landscape architecture? I need advice!!! I am going to be a sophomore in college and currently am a chemistry major. I am thinking about changing my major to landscape architecture but I don't know if this is the right choice for me. I am not talented artistically but with a good work ethic, I can make do. I am afraid that not being artistically gifted will put me at a disadvantage with this major. What do you think? I am really really organized, love being outside and gardening which is why I think this major may be the right one.
Urban Planning vs Landscape architecture? I am an urban planning major in college. Does anyone have any suggestion on whether should peruse a masters in urban planning, a masters in landscape architecture, or a dual degree program (MURP and MLA)?

Changin my major from Business Administration to Landscape Architecture? Ok I am currently at a four year private school and I am a junior. I am a business administration major but I have ALWAYS wanted to be a landscape architect and I am transferring schools so I can be closer to home. However, I am going stick with business administration and I plan on getting my bachelors in it in spring 2009. Here is my situation, I have heard that I could go to graduate school for "Master of Landscape Architecure" and get my masters in that, therefore I get a that nice combo. I have been advised that it is sort of late to try to get my bachelors now in Landscape architecture because I would spend another entire academic year just doing the pre-reqs to get into the program which is going to hold me back longer. What do you guys think? What should I do? Is it a good idea to just get my bachelors in business then master in landscape architecture? please give me any ideas/advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks alot!

Landscape architecture question? Hey all! I'm considering pursuing a Master's degree in Landscape architecture (my BS is in Communication). I took a couple of architecture courses in high school and loved it save for the math involved. It's for that reason that I didn't work on a Bachelor's degree in architecture in the first place. I love drawing, writing, and gardening, so in most respects this would be an excellent career choice for me (I think). Did any architects out there (landscape or otherwise) struggle with arithmetic in school? Does it hinder you in anyway in your career, or did you overcome your struggles? How do you enjoy your work presently? Thanks!
architecture or landscape architecture? I can't decide which of the two I should major in. I've always envision myself working for in a big company, and perhaps travel a lot across countries (this sounds business like, but i have no interest in business). It seems like with the current societal emphasis on the environment, landscape architecture will ensure my a job after graduation, but architecture seems more exciting and can bring me international opportunities? Ahh..I don't decide...can anyone with experience in either of the two fields provide me some personalized information on the two professions? any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Landscape Architecture Internship Abroad? Are there any landscape architects or students of the profession who have gone abroad during their years of studies and worked as an intern in a foreign firm? How difficult is it to get to that point? What year students are they most likely to accept? Is it essential to be fluent in their language? What credentials would put you over the top of an easier to hire local student?
Landscape Architecture Theory? Can anyone please help! I need a good explanation of what theory in landscape architecture is all about. The instructor is no help, and the books are way too complicated. Any help is greatly appreciated. :0)
CAD for construction trades? Plumbing? Landscape? Architecture? Careers? I'm a print graphic designer (packaging) and I'm looking for a career change. I'd love to get into a more technical field where my experience is at least somewhat relative. What are the industry standard applications? Mac? I've done a little 3d in Lightwave and Modo but it REALLY doesn't interest me. I'm looking more at the technical aspects. Any ideas? Advice?
Master in Landscape Architecture? I am looking to change careers and am considering getting my Masters in Landscape Architecture. (I already have a Bachelor degree.) Upon graduation with this Masters degree, can anyone tell me what kind of salary I should expect? And what your thoughts are on the field of study? (FYI: I have checked out all the sites - asla, gov't ones, etc. so don't forward those to me please - I am looking to hear from/speak to individuals with personal experience/knowledge) Thanks! :)

Landscape Architecture or Architecture Salaries? Does Landscape Architecture have a better salary than normal Architecture or is it the other way around or are they both similar? When should I expect acceptance or denial to Cal Poly schools for Landscape Architecture? I applied to Cal Poly SLO and Pomona for Landscape Architecture at the beginning/end of October (respectively). Is it normal for it to take this long (it is Jan. 23rd)? I know my major is competitive, but I am a transfer student with a 3.5 GPA and previous work experience in my major. Any ideas? I applied to Cal Poly SLO and Pomona for Landscape Architecture at the beginning/end of October (respectively). I haven't heard from either one and my online application status says it is still under review. Is it normal for it to take this long (it is Jan. 23rd)? I know my major is competitive, but I am a transfer student with a 3.5 GPA and previous work experience in my major. Any ideas? *so not hearing an immediate denial is a good sign?

Landscape design/architecture? I've always been interested in gardens/landscape/flowers/ trees, etc. I want to make designing/beautifying gardens my hobby. I am just starting out and I have a lot to learn... There are 2 parts to my question: --What's the difference between landscape design and landscape architecture? --Do I need to become a plant expert? For example, if I am planning a section of a garden and I want a tree that has beautiful large pink flowers, should I be expected to list the names of all trees that match this description? (i.e. the magnolia tree). Do I need to become knowledgeable of the life cycles of all different types of plants and what specifically needs to be done to take care of them (i.e. know that X plant needs a lot of sunlight and a lot of water, while Y plant grows well in clay soil, etc)? Thanks!
Landscape Architecture without math skills? I am positive I want to be a Landscape Architect; however, I have only average math skills. I excel in Art class and know I am capable of the drawing aspect, but if I am getting C+ and B- grades in high school math, will I be able to pass the math requirements for a BLA degree? I think that my desire to become a LA would help me buckle down and focus on the math courses. Lastly, I am thinking about getting a Bachelors degree in Urban and Regional Planning, then getting a three year Master's degree in Landscape Architecture, as opposed to the five year BLA. I know Planners and LA's usually work together, but I like the idea of having two separate degrees. Sorry for how long this is. Any help from a LA or LA student or an Urban Planner would be appreciated. Or anybody who know's anything about the field. Oh wait, I'm not done. I have researched this question so giving me websites probably wouldn't be helpful, since I have probably been there before.
cal poly san luis obispo or uc davis landscape architecture? i need major help in decidng where to transfer to for college. i'm going for lanscape architecture and i know cal poly seem to be the best chose and it is well known name but davis is also not bad.
