research proposal about gothic architecture: what is the main criteria of gothic architecture?

WHAT? What question do you specifically intend to focus on? WHY? Why do you think this is an important subject to raise?WHEN? In what moment in history did this take place? When/where did your architect live? What was happening at that time? Any important movements/ideas that need to be pointed out? HOW? This is very important. It relates to how you are going to investigate your subject? What is the best way to help you discuss the problem and to arrive to your conclusion? What examples will you use? And which architect’s work will best allow you to explore the research question? For example, you may choose to illustrate, analyze and interpret three buildings. Or you may do a comparative study between two or three buildings/ architects?

  1. Structural design elements of gothic architecture are characterized by high, pointed arches, ceilings made of ribbed vaults, and walls supported by flying buttresses. The non-structural design elements are emotive, yet often invoke images of everyday life. For instance, stained glass windows in a gothic cathedral may show not only images of a suffering Christ but also images of people working in the fields. I'm sure if you do a bit of your own research you'll find more. HTH
