What is the relationship between spirituality and Gothic architecture?

Public Comments

  1. The fact that the Gothic arch is pointed at the top - pointing towards Heaven. Pax- C
  2. The type of architecture (like that you would see in a cathedral) has windows that arch, and columns that use lines that seem to "draw you eyes upward" in order to worship. Most people find themselves with their heads high when they enter those buildings with the high ceilings and the way the buildings seem to draw your attention toward the lord above. Kinda cool hugh
  3. I am pretty sure, most gothic architecture is assumed to hold spirits for the symbolism. Goth in of itself is rooted deeply into spirits, ghost, creatures of the dark, etc.
  4. In addition to what others said, innovations used in Gothic architecture allowed buildings to be both taller and less bulky than before. So while the eye was drawn upward, the building also looked delicate and ethereal, impossibly tall for its bulk. Flying butresses, for example, are remarkably strong, but look delicate.
