- the hunch back of notre dame is a really good book and the main thing is the cathedral of notre dame. which is Gothic architecture
- If you have a Borders near you there is a book in the discounted books section(at least here in philly) that has very detailed images, and had plans as well. unfortunately i do not know the name
- One of the great classics of art history is the study of two famous examples of Gothic architecture by a famous historian: "Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres" by Henry Adams. Read that if you read nothing else. Among scholarly books, you have a feast awaiting you. Here are a few: Arslan, Edoardo--Gothic Architecture in Venice Aubert, Marcel--Gothic Cathedrals of France and Their Treasures Bony, Jean--French Gothic Architecture of the XII and XIII Centuries Branner, Robert--Chartres Cathedral (ibid)--Gothic Architecture Evans, Joan--Art in Medieval France 987-1498 (excellent broader history) Favier, Jean--The World of Chartres Fitchen, John--The Construction of Gothic Cathedrals Frankl, Paul--Gothic Architecture Frisch, T.G.--Gothic Art 1140-c.1450: Sources and Documents Grodecki, Louis--Gothic Architecture Jantzen, Hans--High Gothic: The Classic Cathedrals of Chartres, Reims, and Amiens Johnson, James--The Radiance of Chartres Katzenellenbogen, Adolf--The Sculptural Programs of Chartres Cathedral Mark, Robert--Experiments in Gothic Structure Martindale, Andrew--Gothic Art Murray, S.B.--Beauvais Cathedral: Architecture of Transcendence Panofsky, Erwin--Abbot Suger on the Abbey Church of St. Denis and Its Art Treasures (a classic) (ibid)--Gothic Architecture and Scholasticism (another classic) Von Simson, Otto Georg--The Gothic Cathedral Wilson, Christopher--The Gothic Cathedral A famous cultural study of the period, which has much to say about art and architecture, is Jan Huizinga--The Waning of the Middle Ages (aka The Autumn of the Middle Ages).
