discuss the relationship between spirituality and Gothic architecture.?

Public Comments

  1. It's the idea of thin, fragile arches upwards to the heavens, light and airy, with time consuming labor in it's design, not so impressive today but back then when people lived in mud, stone or sod hovels and were familiar with only neolithic or Roman arches, it was quite impressive.
  2. surely its more to the psychology of the space, the arrangement of space and the use of structural elements to create a unreal or higher sense. but honestly, you put this question up last week do wanna do my homework.. its about anthony vidler, and decontructionist architecture and post modernity. discuss
  3. The catholic church was all powerful and had the final say on everything then, and during the Gothic period many buildings were designed by priests. Therefore most buildings were cathedrals, or resembled cathedrals, which were extremely decorative monuments built to praise God. Gothic architecture is significant in that you will often find detailed arches and cornices inside and outside the buildings, as well as very colorful stained glass windows usually depicting Bible stories. The statues, reliefs and stained glass windows often told a story together. I recommend reading "The Sign and the Seal" by Graham Hancock, and "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet. They should help in capturing the essence of Architecture and Spirituality during the Gothic era.
