  5. Yes, they made there debut in Gothic architecture. The major architecture movement before the Gothic was the Romanesque, a style that creates very heavy, thick architecture with few windows. With the introduction of the Gothic style, innovations in engineering allowed for larger areas of space that were not needed to support the weight of the building, so this is the period when large ornate stain glass windows became popular, including the rose windows. The rose window in particular is usually found in churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary, considering the rose is her symbol. For example, one of the most famous rose widows in the world is the one in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, and the name "Notre Dame" literally means "Our Lady" in reference to the Virgin Mary.
