why do you think so?

  1. Modern architecture - and by that I think you mean contemporary architecture - can be both beautiful and ugly. (This is a personal thing). I think the architecture known as high-tech - popular in the 1970s was ugly. All the functional parts were displayed instead of hiding them. The Pompidou Center, Paris, e.g. with all those horrific colored tubes and pipes exposed. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=high+tech+pompidou+center&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi But look at recent designs by Spanish architect Calatrava such as the Teneriffe Opera House - they are stunningly beautiful. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=calatrava+&um=1&ie=UTF-8 But I think that Frank Gehry's design for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is an eye sore even though it received much praise. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guggenheim_Museum_Bilbao Why? Gehry made no attempt to intergrate the building into the landscape of this (once quiet) Spanish town and it is an eyesore. On the other hand, the design for the Olympic Stadium in Beijing (known as the Birds Nest) is both functional and beautiful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing_National_Stadium So there you have it: Modern design can be beautiful and ugly. It depends on your taste.
