What were the key characterstics of the Greek art and architecture period?

1. Jeez, I don't know. Life like statues and Doric columns? Massive temples and government buildings? Willingness to commit community resources to all of these? As an aside, I was shocked when I learned that the statues had originally been painted with skin tones, colored clothing, etc. One is so used to seeing them in stone color. I wonder if all the statues of heroes and statesmen we have created would have been painted if everyone had realized that the Greek ones were, since they were such an obvious influence.
