Is a carreer in Architecture Design a good idea?

Im considering going to college to study this. I have taken a class where you build advanced 3d models of houses with all the important stuff. I have also learned about structures and weight and all that stuff. Is this a good paying/high demand field?

  1. Yes. It's a good paying/high demand field. But more important than that, do you have the desire to learn and immerse yourself in this field? Do you see yourself working in an architecture firm? Are you detail-oriented? Do you have the creativity to come up with new designs all the time? If you really like it, then go for it. I would suggest that you get an internship with an architecture firm so that you can get a close look at the industry, the work, the skills necessary to be successful. Good luck!
  2. If you're not really sure what you want to do (and many people aren't sure when they start college), I would suggest that you go ahead and apply as an architecture major because many schools make it very difficult to switch to an architecture major later (architecture is often a "limited enrollment" major - they take a certain number of students as freshmen and then may let a few transfer in as juniors but usually not very many). It is far easier to switch out of an architecture major than to get in if you didn't start there as a freshman. If you are solely looking for a field where your skills will always be in demand and the pay is high, I would suggest structural engineering rather than architecture. It tends to pay better, plus the government is always hiring engineers for military related jobs so there is a high degree of demand. If you are truly interested in the design process, go for architecture. The schooling and licensing process is very demanding and you probably won't want to go through this if you're just looking for money and job security. But you will always have a job and will always be paid well if you take the time and effort to become the best in your field, and this is easy if you love your job. Another option you might consider is starting out with a dual major. You will take the required architecture classes and take the basic lecture courses for your second major. You can always drop the second major later or put it off until after you finish the rigorous architecture studio classes.
