is there a field of work that involves both interior design and architecture?

I'm thinking about starting my own business that designs houses. Any ideas on how to do this? What degrees would I need? I would like to create a business that designs houses (both with architecture and interior design). I was wondering what my first steps to making this happen should be. Also what classes I should take in college, good colleges etc. etc.

  1. You would need an engineering degree.
  2. I've found that field experience in what you're talking about far outweighs the value of any sort of degree. You should, however, take classes to familiarise yourself with the current ilk of CAD software that is used today. You could build a portfolio, frequent the library with design specific books on kitchens, baths, etc. There's no specific universally named discipline that ties interior design with architecture (I've about 15 years cumulative experience in both). You can be a self-taught architect in certain municipalities, and it's cost effective for prospective clientelle if you can do the architectural and rendering design yourself, having only the engineer's seal (which is what most places require, not so much a licensed architect's seal). You can pay the engineer as a contractor for overlooking your designs and giving you the seal. You'll be dealing with engineers in the land development phase (including the foundation), the structural phase and the electrical compliance phase. I've been looking into trying to go into business for myself, but it couldn't be a one man op, and I lack the the talent public relations - my portolio is the only thing that sells my design capacity, let alone my intelligence....but anyway... You may find yourself overwhelmed at first, so start off with very small projects and build from there. that's the best succinct answer I can give on a subject that merits a lot more discussion.
