How is the scientific method applied, or rather hypothesis tested, in subjective arts and design disciplines such as art, design and architecture. Example; the problem is how should a building be sculpted or styled in a given context? Hypothesis, gather clues from the context and formulate a thematic strategy. Then test it against known precedents for credibility and apply. The problem in creative disciplines is just this, the context or conditions are normally specific to the project and solutions creative and original. Thus, it would be counter productive and/or hard to find and use precedents. Finally, results are subjected to taste; a solution that works just fine on paper could still be rejected in practice. How should the design disciplines then be informed and should the scientific method be used at all? Please help.
