Differences in architecture in the Byzantine Empire and the western half of the former Roman Empire?

Or any similarities? Thanks!

  1. Byzantine architecture is basically a continuation of roman architecture. Usually it's characterized by its extensive use of mosaic all over the building as decoration, increase in geometric complexity, less use of classic Greek orders, and better use of the structural elements like complex domes structures that sits on piers and structures that allow more opened windows. See examples like Hagia Sophia, Cathedral of St. Sophia, Basilica of San Vitale (Ravenna) Hope that helps.
