Do you have to major in interior design to become an interior designer or can you major in architecture?
I recently got accepted to U of Illinois, it does not offer an interior design program but it does offer a degree in architecture. I am not certain what I want to be yet but I was curious if the degree in architecture could offer flexibility for my career choice. I want to be sure that if I do end up majoring in architecture I could still possibly be an interior designer. I was also curious if I do want to be an interior designer I could possibly double major with some sort of art and architecture?

- I attended a workshop a couple months ago, considering a new focus in my career. Both occupations were high on my list. Based on what I read, it appears that with a Degree in Architecture, you certainly could work in Interior Design. Not the other way around. The one to ask would be the Academic Counselor at U of Illinois.
- Architectural design will be a better money maker. Interior design can be picked up as a side program, even online. Interior design at the moment is in the toilet with the economy. However both areas may be lucrative in 4-6 years. Furniture and interiors is a commission-based job with lots of disappointments. If you have the architectural degree and a good eye, you may be able to do both without the interior design degree. Look on the internet for ASID programs. I worked in 2 furniture stores with lots of people and only one was ASID. And most of those people at the moment are unemployed.
