- The basic disciplines of architecture are design and engineering. You need to have an understanding of materials science, and a good grasp of the technology of construction. Is it hard? Depends on you. Some people naturally find themselves interested in engineering, and have a native sense of design. Others have to learn these things. There is no quantifiable answer to your question.
