Can someone help me select a building for an architecture essay?

I need to write about how the building is a building of its time. I really need to relate it to the culture at the time of which it was built. Can you suggest some ideas? I've also been recommended not to use a building of which will lead me into writing the whole essay on just the architecture of the building e.g cathedrals :/

  1. The St. Louis arch... or my butt!! TEE HEE
  2. The Eiffel Tower simply because of the time it was built in and the monumental task of building it. It actually could be considered a building since it has elements of one. There is a restaurant at the top, and it has elevators, so maybe this would be interesting enough.
  3. The Dancing house in Prague, Czech Republic
  4. The Empire State Building is certainly a building of its time.
  5. the Burj Al Arab in Dubai
  6. St Patrick's Cathedral Taj Mahal St John the Divine Cathedral Notre Dame Sears Tower John Hancock Building Empire state building
  7. The Amish Barn. Religion. Teamwork. Neighborly. Social Network. Available Materials. No Electricity. 300 years of same engineering style. Nobody ever does this and it would be simple. Simplicity is the entire idea. Over the years I have seen the kids choose all the famous buildings. They never pick the Amish Barn. So many twin tower essays I have seen. Try something different.
  8. empire state building
  9. the walt disney concert hall everything in it has a purpose and even its location has meaning in it. and culture really determined how it was made and is now viewed
  10. Bannerman Castle http://www.bannermancastle.org/ Historic and now under trust for reconstruction
  11. Here's a diverse selection: Pirellone in Milan, Italy Penn Station in NYC (demolished in 1963) Angkor Wat in Cambodia Monticello in Virginia Sydney Opera House in Australia Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden Pirellone in Milan, Italy
  12. In the early part of the 1900s, there was a race to build the worlds tallest building. The race was started by the completion of the Eiffel tower in Paris 1889. Many skyscraper buildings went up in the 1920s and the crown jewels of the race are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State building, both in New York City. The Chrysler building held the record of world's tallest for less than a year until the Empire State building was completed in 1931, which held the record for the next 40 years. Both of these buildings represent a period of late 1920s when the cultural attitude was nothing is impossible and the sky is the limit. The Chrysler building is my personal favorite building. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Building http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_State_Building http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_America%27s_Favorite_Architecture_according_to_the_AIA
