what do architecture critics mean when they call a building "cynical" or "nihilistic"?

I know what these words mean on their own (I have access to a dictionary). But I am not sure what exactly it means when they are used to critique architecture.

  1. I know what you mean - sounds odd to use terms terms on an inanimate object. So lets get behind these terms - shall we call them metaphors? Both are negative. They imply that the architect (and hence the building) has a cynical or nihilistic perspective upon one or many of the varios aspects whcih make up the built project. I could be the client, the client's wishes, the type of building, the siting of the building, the use of the building, those that use the building, the society in general or just the whole g'd'm world... Difficult to specify without a concrete case but most of the time architects have literally constructive view of things ;-)
