I think I've found my passion in life: Landscaping! Now what do I do?!?

I'm a college senior about to graduate in Business Marketing, but I recently got a summer job on the grounds crew at a local country club. I've come to REALLY enjoy being outside and designing plant beds and putting together nature in an artistic way. I've been reading up a bit on Landscape Architecture but it seems like quite a complex area with a lot of information. Where should I even BEGIN researching this industry and what advice does anyone in landscaping have on how to get started? Thanks in advance!

  1. Well keep working at it and learn all you can. Take some classes that relate to horticulture and landscape design. Work a season in a nursery and learn as much as you can about plants that really work in your area. Learn about soil. And all kinds of installations, water features, watering systems, beds, raised beds. You should have the business part of it covered in your college, now get all the exposure you can and then possibly decide what you like the best and want to specialize in or you will have to deal with hiring help if your business grows too big for you to handle.
  2. just use your creativeness.......and I'm sure your landscaping will be great........
  3. You might augment your education with some agricultural classes and also EPA rules and regulations. Keep the work going at the country club to gain more experience. You might also try some Zoos and also College landscaping jobs. The landscape architecture courses will help and it is a constantly evolving industry.
  4. That all depends on what interests you most. Try getting other jobs and expose yourself to other practises, but so far, it seems like you're into landscape architecture. At the moment, you can take any horticulture courses, or even landscape courses in most colleges, depending on where you are. If you're already that passionate about it, just keep at it and your future will unfold itself...you just need to give it a little kick-start.
  5. Rather than type out lots of stuff here, go to this website: http://www.lawnsite.com/ Lawnsite is a forum group for for people in the business - it'd be a great place to do some research. The people there are helpful and nothing beats experience. I am a member of the site as well.
  6. I too became a lover of landscaping. The biggest thing to know is what types of plants to put where and why. I have seen some landscaping companies put shade plants in the sun and vice versa or small plants trees in large areas or vice versa. You might want to try getting a job in a local nursery, retail or wholesale. They usually always hire in the early spring for the rush season and would be a great place to learn. I started out working at twixwood.com and became hooked on plants and planting things. A landscaper must know about the plants they are planting otherwise whatever you plant will not last long.
