What do degrees in Architecture offer?

Can someone describe to me what higher education in Architecture is like/about? Is it mainly about historical buildings like the Parthenon, Taj Mahal and the La Rotonda or about modern architechture like skyscrapers in Tokyo, Shanghai, New York City and the Puerta de Europa towers? What do you study about? Is it about the construction of the buildings, the cultural and historical influence of the buildings, the designing of the buildings etc. Does the course combine infastructure development? Also, what A-levels are desirable to undergo courses in Architecture? Thank you. I live in the UK.

  1. I'm in the US: so things may be a tad different there, but this is what it generally includes. *Design Studio: each term, meets 3 to 4 days a week for 3-4 hours per day: you do projects: beginning with design principles (color theory, etc. then on up to more urban projects) I can't adequately describe this in a sentence. Lots of all nighters and 40-hour workDAYS. This is the main component. *structures: structural concepts, steel, concrete, etc.: what a structural engineer often does; materials and methods. *mechanical/electrical: simple electrical/mechanical/energy use *architectural history and theory: what you are describing in your question, starting with classical forms and going onto postmodernism.. *professional practice: how architects do business and practice. *urban design/urban planning (does not get down to sizing sanitary sewers and the like) *usual core classes, electives. Programs here are either 5 year or 6 year. Bottom line: go in with your eyes open: visit as many schools as you can and make sure this is what you want.
