Anyone know of any good examples of 1950's architecture?

I'm doing an art essay on modern architecture and need to find examples of 1950's buildings.

  1. perhaps you could look at the so called new towns that were built around the 50's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_towns_in_the_United_Kingdom also here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1950s_architecture some names to look for Great architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Philip Johnson, and Edward Durrell Stone were all at work in 1950s America— Hope this helps --
  2. me oh my oh..... put Frank Lloyd Wright into Google IMAGES and then you can literally see what comes up. Last picture in the top row (his home in AZ) is titled in part "Green Architecture Before its Time...." so how's that for timely eh? Also click on the links that appear above the images in google images - like frank lloyd wright windows and frank lloyd wright FURITURE.... The furniture is uber cool : ) ultra retro.
  3. Look at anything produced for the Festival of Britain - this was designed to kick start the building of the new age, and included exemplar schemes which would influence architectural design for the next 25 years or so. This was still a time of austerity - timber was in short supply for example and there were severe restrictions on cost limits and shortage of skilled labour in the UK. Key players are Frederick Gibberd, Leslie Martin, Powell and Moya, Hugh Casson/Neville Conder, Basil Spence. Robert Matthews and Percy Johnson-Marshall, Denys Lasdun, Richard Shepherd, the list is farily endless. Have a look at the Great Buildings on-line site at the RIBA (www.architecture.com). The most important examples are usually listed - visit the English Heritage Site to search the Images of England Database for buildings constructed during the period. Good Examples would be the Buildings at Harlow New Town, The original buildings at Heathrow Airport, Coventry Cathedral, The Royal Festival Hall, as well as public housing schemes such as those by Alison and Peter Smithson, architects of the seminal Economist Building in London. Abroad people like Frank Lloyd Wright were rather in their dotage (Guggenheim Museum) and were giving way to a younger generation of architects such as Louis Khan and Paul rudolph. One landmark building by veteran Le Corbusier (with Oscar Neimeyer) was the UN headquarters in New York which has stood the test of time.
