Modern Residential Architecture...What is your opinion?

Do urban planners have no flare anymore like the Victorians did? Why are most new build developments a labyrinth of dull flimsy looking clones. I don't mean the master pieces of Richard Rogers etc but the ghastly modern estates mushrooming up all over the country. Will people look back in 100 years time and cringe at this period of design with the same contempt as they do now at the horrid 60's high rise apartment blocks ? Why can't we build magnificent solid white pillared terraced mansions anymore with a modern twist. Is creative brickwork, tall ceilings a thing of the past? Surely it cannot always be down to cost and being green ?

  1. i love that they build 6 bedroom houses with a garden the size of a double bed....
  2. unfortunately it is the cost. Most buildings are essentially from a limited amount of designs. That's in part because most are timber frame structure . This means the same dimensions are used again and again thus replication the awful design around the country. I think when regulations incorporate the amount of natural light which must enter a new property and things like solar panels, then the architects will get dynamic with their designs
  3. I think the reason that housing developments look the way they do is because the consumer equates square footage with value. This forces the developer to build houses as large as they can while maximizing the number of houses built. To keep costs down they have a set selection of plans to choose from, this means houses get built faster and cheaper. It's all about making the most money possible. I doubt being green has anything to do with it. In order to change this, people are going to start to have to take more design decisions into their own hands. You would think that people would want to anyway; a home is probably the most expensive thing they'll ever buy. I just read a book called "The Not-so-big House". It's about making a better home for the same amount of money.
  4. It is a combination of government targets, planning regulations, energy conservation madness and profit margins. The trend is to make things worse. Prefabrication, uniformity and shrinking plot ratios will drive the population into termite nests. I despair.
