What's the difference between Modern and Contemporary architecture?
I know the 2 aren't synonymous ..but what's the main difference? Time period? Style? Materials? Some links to picture examples would be nice. I'm not an architectural student ..just wondering.

- Modern Architecture whilst sounding very general actually refers to the "simplification of form and the elimination of ornament" as Wikipedia says. It emerged at the start of the 20th century, in part reactionary against previous political and cultural modes, in part the child of rational industrial architecture and in full, of Enlightenment lineage. Of particular influential was the work of the Bauhaus school in Germany and the work of the French architect Le Corbusier. This resulting US-led style of Philip Johnson and others is typified in the office tower at the heart of all of today's cities. Contemporary architecture on the other hand is no more than the current architecture. For example Classical Roman architecture would have be contemporary to the Romans.
