Which one is the official design software, ArchiCAD or AutoCAD Architecture?

I am having to choose from ArchiCAD from Graphisoft and AutoCAD Architecture from Autodesk. Which one is the most used to most recognised program? or which one is better, easier, better looks, functions or popularity?

  1. autocad
  2. AutoCAD, I've used it in every construction studio that I have had.
  3. This is from personal experience.... I started off with AutoCAD after college because it was the only thing showed to me, mainly due because it was widely used for a longer period of time with user base that scaled off the charts. Then I started working for a small firm which uses ArchiCAD (version 7.0 at the time), I was simply blown away by how fun, unique, and intuitive the program is. I used it ever since. It is an incredible program and I highly recommend it. From massing models all the way to construction documents with BIM as one of its major foundations.....it surely shows great promise to aspiring architects and well experienced ones too. You should check out the main site to see for yourself.. www.graphisoft.com
  4. Normally, I would say AutoCAD, but the latest software skills employers are looking is REVIT, similar to ArchiCAD. One of the big reasons why ArchiCAD didn't make a big splash in the profession is because it was originally a Mac OS only software. REVIT is a hog on your hardware, it is the software many offices have embraced.
  5. Either one is acceptable, although AutoCad skills aren't worth much any more, as most offices are more interested in Autodesk's auto cad. Personally, I prefer ArchiCad, but then again, I do use a mac. Its a program that is beginning to gain popularity thanks to the number of students leaving school who used in on their private machines. I do feel that it is more design-oriented, but in the end, Revit is probably a more powerful program.
