What is the Domino Housing Project and why is it significant to modern architecture?
Public Comments
- Domino is a structural framing system that takes the previously conventional column and slab schema used in concrete construction, but in domino the columns that would have been at the perimeter of the building are set back from the edge, thus the elevations of the building are freed from the literal expression of the structure, the floor slabs can also be thinner since the interior span between the columns is reduced and some of the slab is cantilevered beyond the columns. This system was devised by the Swiss Architect Le Corbusier, its significance is severalfold; it is the beginning of curtainwalling, it enabled the architectural languages of corbusier and mies van der rohe.
