- A portfolio is a collection of examples of his work... like if he's built any models or drawn up any designs, they want to see that kind of thing. If the school is specifically for architecture, is it for a graduate degree? If it is he'll need a bachelors degree first... If it's for a bachelors degree, then yeah, he still needs a portfolio. My school offers a Bachelors & Masters in Architecture (The Savannah College of Art and Design) and has a really good architecture program. :) But yeah... Portfolio is "examples of your work", like pictures of architecture models or example blueprints, etc... OR if he ever designed a house that actually got built, that'd be a BIG plus for his portfolio. ------------------------------------------------------- Architecture is my #2 career choice (#1 is author) BUT it's too competative for me, so I'm going with my #3 choice, video game design...
- A portfolio is a selection of creative work to show the school. He should get in touch with the colleges and ask exactly what the portfolio requirements are because they're very different from school to school. For example, some schools want to see evidence of your architectural interests, eg models, sketches of buildings etc, whereas some just want to see evidence of artistic skill and creativity, and are happy to see any kind of artwork. Some schools want to see mainly drawings and are happy for you to include technical drawings as well as freehand sketches, whereas some want to see a wide range of work, eg drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography etc. He should also ask about the size guidelines - how many pieces he's expected to include, and whether he's to send off originals, scan them and send them via email, or take them with him to an interview. Some schools want you to include a piece of writing about one or more of your pieces. Some schools (in the UK anyway) issue a "drawing task", where they basically give you a title or topic and you have to do a drawing under that heading. Good luck to your boyfriend =]
