Art Institute of Chicago or the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago?

I'm going to be visiting Chicago for a day and would like to go to an art museum. But I don't know much about either. I'll be up there in May. As far as my preferences in Art, I like it all. I like a lot of traditional art and contemporary art (besides most of the my third grader could do that modern art). I'm going to school for architecture and minoring in Art History so I'd like to get the most out of this trip I could. Which Museum would you recommend? The Art Institute of Chicago, or the Museum of Contemporary Art? Thanks!

  1. Tough to pick. Both are great. But if you have to see only ONE, then go for the Art Institute. You can see the old masters AND the modern stuff. The name of the Museum of Contemporary Art is self explanatory. There's great stuff there, but you don't get the Van Goghs, the Monets, etc.
  2. Art Institute of Chicago! They have the famous pieces, and hopefully the nw addition will be somewhat open.
  3. You can't go to Chicago and not go to the Art Institute. Not only is it famous, but it's really great too. Go there.
  4. Both are good but if you have to pick one definitely go to the Art Institute of Chicago, especially if you've never been there. If you know anything about art you will definitely recognize some of the most famous paintings ever. And while it is known for its impressionism they have much more than that alone. May I also suggest you walk around the city and experience the urban sculptures? A walk in the loop will reveal a Picasso in Daley Plaza, a Miro across the street, a Flamingo by Calder on Dearborn, and a Chagall Mosaic at the Chase Plaza. There is yet another Calder, a huge mobile in the Sears Tower Lobby. It will merely cost you a little time but not much because all are fairly close by.
  5. Though they're both great museums, the Art Institute does have an edge. It's much bigger, with areas dedicated to architecture as well as two-dimensional art. If you're coming May 16th or later, the Modern Wing will be open to the public. I've been inside already, and it looks beautiful-- the building itself is art! There's an opening celebration on the weekend of May 16th for the building.
  6. Art Institute - Its just my favorite - I could spend the whole day there for sure!
  7. The Art Institute is world class; don't miss it !
