AP Art History FRQ Help (30min essay)?

I'm required to provide two pieces of art that demonstrate a challenge against established contemporary traditions. 1 piece of art needs to be chosen prior to 1800BCE and one after. I know that I'm going to write about Akenhaten's reformed Egypt under Aten for my earlier example (sunken relief w/ Nefertiti I suppose). But I can't determine an art piece that truly challenges established artistic traditions post 1800 BCE. I was thinking of using Rauschenberg or even abstract artists like Mondrian or Pollock, but I'm not too adamant about my choices. Any suggestions? (Architectures such as Ghery's Guggenheim are allowed also)

  1. You could talk about Corot or Manet's work outside the French academic traditions. Specifically thinking about Corot's series of paintings of roe deer where he used a palette knife to apply paint to the canvas at a time that the hand of the artist was supposed to be more or less invisible. Manet did a series of provocative contemporary life sized portraits of beggars/philosophers as elegantly posed as thought they were kings or generals. Then there is always Sargent's portrait of Madame X. In the original presentation with her slipped shoulder strap, the insinuation was that she was a married woman meeting a lover. (True.) This flaunting of etiquette scandalized the French public. Sargent requested the opportunity to repaint the strap during the Salon and the request was denied. However, as soon as the show was over, he repainted the strap in the upright position. There is only one known photograph of the original version. Interestingly enough, Sargent kept the painting in his studio for the next 30+ years and then agreed to sell it to the Met in New York for a price below it's market value.
