What is the meaning of the architecture in the Middle Ages?

I have to write a two page essay on this and I'd just like a few points about the architecture (mainly Gothic and Romanesque styles) back then. Keep in mind I'm not asking for someone to write the essay for me, just a few ideas.

  1. Gothic had lots of spires and fancy stuff while Romanesque was really heavy, made of thick stone. Since it was so heavy, it had few windows since it may collapse. They were also really dark and gloomy.
