What are colleges with a good architecture program?

Now, I have a year or two to figure out where I want to go to college, but I'd like to start early. I'm pretty sure I'm going to major in architecture and I was wondering what some good schools are for it. Particularly in the Midwest or New England areas. And I have a 28 composite ACT score and a 3.8 GPA. I do a lot of volunteer work, and I have some good extracurriculars. Could this get me into these schools?

  1. Hi - probably the best way to research - and stay current - on the country's best architecture schools - both undergrad and grad is through Design Intelligence. The second link below brings you to its 2009 Architecture and Design School rankings. Unfortunately there's a fee. It's good you know what regions you're interested in - because rankings are really weighted based on region. I've attached a link from Architect Online. At the end of the article, Design Intelligence and Design Futures Council released its 2008 findings.. The Top East Coast or Midwest programs last year were Virginiat Polytechnic, Cornell, Syracuse, University of Cincinnati, Carnegie Mellon, Kansas State and Penn State. Hope this helps.
  2. I'm an architecture student so I have a pretty good knowledge of the architecture community within academia. For undergraduate, it tends to go up and down while graduate level schools have the usual ivy league schools as its top architecture program. Cornell is number 1 without a doubt for undergraduate, and Syracuse stay consistently on top as well. UT Austin, Rice do well as well (but I presume you don't like the west) Art schools in the east offer very good programs, RISD and Pratt. Carnegie Mellon, Penn state are good but they are more technical, math oriented. If you're really good and you get accepted to an ivy league school other than cornell, you should major in something other than architecture and then go into m.arch program for graduate school, because you can get a architecture license like that. Plus you can really decide on what you're interested in because once you start b.arch degree, you need to put in a lot of commitment and know for sure that you'll be an architect the rest of your life.
