Is Architecture the right career path for me?

I’m going into my senior year of high school and have had my mind set on going into Architecture, literally, since Elementary. My parents noticed that I had an eye for designing and building things such as houses and buildings since I was a toddler. I have been involved in architecture organizations, related classes, and met with people in the profession, etc, and love everything about it. After meeting with the director at an Architecture school for several hours, I now question whether it is really what I want to pursue or not because there are so many other aspects of design that I like. By talking to her I realized I not only loved designing the buildings themselves, but I also have a passion for what surrounds it, such as streets, boulevards, and how they are planned out, and what makes that area look nice, etc. I pay much attention to what areas look like and how they are planned, and she took that as me maybe being more interested in Landscape Architecture, which I do not think I would enjoy at all, but also Urban Planning, which I have thought about doing before. I enjoy learning about the demographics in areas and trends and what areas are lacking and what aspects they are good in. My goal was to become an Architect/Developer someday because it gives me the best of both worlds, I think. I also have had somewhat of an interest in Marketing which is completely in a different ballpark. Does it sound like I’m on the right track? Are there other professions that I might want to look into? I’m overwhelmed because for once in my life, I’m unsure about this.

  1. you have to follow what your desires are, that being the cornerstone of being successful at what you do also, what are your attributes toward whichever one you seem to lean toward, and your educational accomplishments in that field
  2. For general career information: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'architects', 'urban and regional planners', 'landscape architects' or such. There should be additional websites at the end of the entry as well as 'related occupations'. Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as penn foster, strayer, ITT tech, university of phoenix, ashworth, sanford brown, kaplan, capella, walden and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and credits may not transfer to other schools): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search. For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ Here is a website for possible volunteer opportunities, and perhaps there is a non-profit agency that deals with urban planning or such in which you may be able to help out with and get a general sense of the field: http://www.volunteermatch.org
