I would like to design, remodel, and build homes...where do I start?
I have NO experience, but I do have a Bachelor's degree (in Art). Should I find a school program, get a masters in Architecture degree, apprentice under a general contractor? Any suggestions on where I should start to get the most efficient and financially practical results would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

- D. All of the above! there is alot that goes into designing, remodeling, and building homes. the biggest and most expensive part will be the Arch. degree. You can most likely just show up on a job site and ask the foremen if you can start working, although knowing how to do that kind of stuff will def help. Also knowing how to build and building specs will help with the Arch. degree but at the same rate the Arch. degree will help with the hands on construction. It wont be easy i'll say that much
- Angelina, it all depends on what you want to do. If you want to design but not build, you should study architecture but then will have to work for many years with an architect to learn the tricks of the trade. If you want to build, you should work with a contractor. There are also now companies that do what's called "Design-Build." They do both. I am a professional architect in Maryland. If you live anywhere close, I might be able to help you find a contractor that you can work with.
- Going to school is an excellent option, especially in this economy. If you can find an internship at an architecture firm that could get you some experience under your belt. For remodeling, you might be able to get away with starting out with interior design and building a portfolio and working with a more experienced re-modeler who could show you the ropes for the construction aspect. If you are going beyond changing paint and accessories, make sure you check about permits so you don't run into trouble. Your art background is a great foundation and can give you a real edge when you are trying to break into a business.
