- Early Christianity (2nd century to 5th century) grew up in a very Hellenized part of the Roman Empire. Christians didn't seem to draw a fine line between pagan & Christian art and architecture. Instead, they incorporated Greco-Roman styles that surrounded them in everyday life into their art, often with new meaning. You can find examples of Greco-Roman influence everywhere, particularly once Christianity became the imperial standard. Start with churches - the early church buildings themselves (and, consequently, modern churches) are modeled after Roman basilicae. The basilica was a sort of market and meeting space with a large open area. The best way to learn more is to look at examples of early Christian art and structures. There are plenty of photos online. Make sure they date from about 200-500 AD. Then compare Greek and Roman art & monuments from the same period.
