Why was "modern architecture" never accepted by the masses?

Despite the zeal of most Architects to promote modern architecture for the last 80 years it is clear that most people do not accept it and instead cling to traditional forms of building. If one looks at residential construction in the US I would say that over 99% of new houses can be classified as traditional.

  1. I'd say a variety of reasons could be the answer: -Modern architecture, I believe, is the architectural equivalent of modern art, which is also hit-or-miss. Some people either love it and some simply hate it. The only reason traditional architecture is so widely accepted is because, for the most part, we are raised with it as the norm. -Secondly, houses, obviously depending on region, aren't all new, so rather than spending a good chunk of money to tear down and rebuild a new house of contemporary styling, many opt to just make do with what is currently there. You notice that more office buildings and skyrises, which are being erected at a considerably faster rate, often feature modern stylings more often than the newly built house down the road. -Lastly, many communities also have strict building codes that must be adhered to in order to even let a house go up. For instance, in my neighborhood, all the homes are colonial, with a certain style roof, and heck, even the shape of the garage door was a factor.
