How did the architecture of the ancient world, especially that of Rome influence modern urban planning?

Public Comments

  1. Geographically speaking, in the ancient world the cities housed the government centers and the businesses. Residences were assigned to the surrounding hillsides, seldom in the valleys. They were built close to water supplies, and within travel distance of each other. It wasn't like living in caves, or small nomadic villages. They were built to last centuries, with subdivisions, and with temples for worship, and buildings for public use and entertainment.
  2. The basic grid structure of modern urban planning was developed in ancient rome. The ancient Romans used a consolidated scheme for city planning, developed for military defence and civil convenience. The basic plan is a central plaza with city services, surrounded by a compact rectilinear grid of streets and wrapped in a wall for defence. To reduce travel times, two diagonal streets cross the square grid corner-to-corner, passing through the central square.
