What happened to beautiful architecture?Which building can you say is beautiful after 1950s?

Public Comments

  1. The building known as 'the gherkin' in the City of London.
  2. Innovative and artistic architecture is rare to find nowadays thanks to our ultra capitalism system. It's expensive to build something that is out of the ordinary. All the cathedral built in the past put most of modern architecture to shame in my opinion.
  3. Agree with Flup - the Gherkin is a fabulous piece of architecture.
  4. The reason older architecture is good is because all the rubbish from that time has been demolished (or fallen down of its own accord). Like music, only the good stuff survives. Modern buildings have their triumphs and their failures. Most of them are only designed to last 20 years and have more to do with shipbuilding than architecture.
  5. While I agree the quality of architecture has decreased, I do think there are many fine modern buildings. Part of the reason is most buildings today are built by developers, in the past it was architects or stone-masons who were responsible. Developers are more focused on making profit than creating a beautiful building or a sustainable and human environment.
  6. Googie architecture and the brutalist and modernist architecture of the 60s: Space Needle in Seattle JFK Airport The many concrete tower blocks in our cities The University of Essex campus, especially the Albert Sloman library The various gas stations and diners of the 50s
  7. Just because you dont find modern architecture attractive, that doesnt make it so - its simply your opinion. Some would call the Bilbao beautiful, others would say the same about the Olympic stadium in Beijing. Different strokes for different folks.
