  1. For every outstanding modern master [Gehry comes to mind] and for every outstanding masterpiece there are tons of copycat wanna-be's whose ego-driven and overpriced structures lack heart and philosophy. The 'older architecture' is comfortable and our eyes are accustomed to it...the new, whether masterpiece or wanna-be, is never comfortable and may never be. The bizarre pyramid outside the Louvre in Paris...the flying paper airplanes made of steel & who knows what...cold & bold but scarcely for human beings. Just try and find a corner you can think in or pray in or assemble in, riiiiiiiight?
  2. This is a tough question. The examples you give are both beautiful in their own rights. It is a matter of perspective. Most modern buildings look sterile and boring, but there are some neo - Gothic buildings that are outlandish and people wonder what were they thinking. I think it is because most modern buildings are sterile looking that most people would feel that neo - Gothic buildings are better overall. Some people like the look of stone rather than steel and glass, but architects and engineers today can manipulate modern building products and can make beautiful buildings, so modern architecture will catch up to most of the neo - Gothic architecture in design.
