- An Interior Architect is a fancy name for an Interior designer. You need to know CAD and have any eye for color.
- I just finished a quarter of Interior Design school, and they mentioned Interior Architecture briefly - saying that a Designer does not have the ability to make adjustments to the interior of an existing building without consulting an Interior Architect first - which will involve CAD, technical drawing and drafting by hand.
- According to Wikipedia, "Interior Architecture bridges the practices of interior design and architecture so that professionals working in the field have a structural and load bearing education with an emphasis on interior spaces. The field is similar to architecture in that it deals with structures and load bearing walls. It is similar to interior design in that it focuses on interior spaces." Based on that, I don't think technical drawing and using CAD is a nice-to-have but not a must. Starting out in the field, you may be doing alot of drafting so you'll learn it on the job. However, for the bulk of your job, it will be about evaluating space and how to make it an interesting environment for the client. The fun part really is the interior design part, in my opinion. To practice this, collect magazine pages of spaces you really like. Before you know it, you'll have developed your own unique style. I believe to be truly successful in this field, you should take some architecture classes and have some natural creativity with a fundamental understanding of colors and textures. Best of luck!
