  1. I don't know that much about it, but here's my take on it. People of the renaissance saw themselves as rather enlightened people who emerged out of the "dark ages" when people cared nothing for the humanities - that is, the study of classical antiquity and its culture and learning - and were mainly caught up in a very limiting and oppressive religious atmosphere. The Renaissance was characterised by a re.. er.. rekindled interest in classical learning, and a love of all things classical. The so called "dark ages" was the period between the end of the Roman period of civilisation and the renaissance... now.. I think it was actually IN the renaissance that they came up with the term "gothic" because the Goths obviously were the ones responsible for the sack of Rome, the final catastrophe associated with the fall of the great Roman empire - viewed as terrible by the men of the Renaissance, and as such they associated the culture of the "dark ages" with these Goths who destroyed the beautiful Roman culture. So.. I would assume that.. the Renaissance was marked by a rejection of gothic architecture and a leaning to a more cleaner, classical-influenced style - columns, clean lines, domes and the like rather than the old gothic towers and flying buttresses and all of that lovely stuff!
