  2. Gothic architecture is seen as an alternative to the Classical architecture of ancient Rome and Greece. It develops in France in the 13th century. The verticality of these buildings suggest they are pointing towards the heavens, and it is seen by some writers of the time that it is Christian architecture. These buildings are "lighter" than Classical architecture because their column supports are spaced further away. Pointed arches (as opposed to plain arches in Roman architecture) allow more flexibility and suggest again the verticality. The rib vault allows them to build more quickly. The flying buttress is more structurally efficient because it allows the building to resist more lateral loads and allows for more open and transparent walls. Decorative elements include stained glass and vaulting. (look up Gloucester Cathedral in England pictures)
