George Saunders (Civilwarland In Bad Decline) Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale) Will Self (The Quantity Theory of Insanity) Two authors I love who died recently are Janet Frame (2004) and Marguerite Duras (1996...well sort of recently.) They are both still in print, still read, still discussed, respected and relevant so I loosely consider them contemporary.
