interior design vs interior architecture?

I am looking into majoring in either interior design or interior architecture, but as I research about them both I can't really see the difference. Can somebody clearly define both careers for me?

  1. I used to work for an architectural firm on their interiors team. -- Interior designers -- Typically handle the layout and aesthetic appearance of a space. Sketch out proposed floor plans and elevations based on meetings with the client. Future meetings include selection of colors, fixtures (electrical and/or plumbing), wall coverings, floor coverings, etc. In addition they also need to know and understand building code as it relates to interiors. They also can not design the layout of a space if it requires any load bearing walls. -- Interior Architecture -- Is a blend of architect and interior designer. They are also interior designers but can design a space that includes load bearing walls. ...and as such need to know building code. This career does require more education than interior design. Particularly in math, engineering, and physics.
