what is contemporary architecture? when did it start? and why?

Public Comments

  1. Contemporary architecture looks back to and incorporates earlier "pre-modern" period historical styles so everyday people will think the building is beautiful. It is also called post-modern architecture. It is essentially a reaction against that philosophy which considers art to be more important than practicality or even "likability," the so-called modern or international style. Rather than thinking outside the box or making a copy of a modern architect's work, postmodernism tries to incorporate past styles that people recognize, i.e. traditional buildings. This movement probably started sometime in the late twentieth century when clients got sick of all the black boxes being built!
