Can I be an architect if I think modern architecture is hideous?

I cannot abide the modern style of architecture that is around at the moment, where the building look like a larger version of something a five year old would make. However, I adore more classic architecture, all stone or dark wood, with sweeping staircases and high ceilings and tall windows. I would love to one day be able to design houses like this, and bring back the style. Is this something that would hinder me in becoming/studying to be an architect? (Or could it help me, because I'm not into what seems to be the usual style?)

  1. Follow your interests and don't be concerned with what is "around at the moment." By the time you are building buildings it will be a totally different "moment" and you could make that moment happen. If the thing that you like is not out there in the world then make it. You should also look into related fields like Historic Preservation of Architecture or just Architecture History. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_preservation In any case, you've got a lot to learn because there is so much more to "modern" (you mean contemporary) AND "classic" architecture. Pick up some books and learn more!
