Does anybody know what is Green Wall architecture?

Public Comments

  1. it usually has to deal in landscape architecture-- Green walls can serve a building in a number of ways. If designed properly they can add insulation to a facade, reduce the destruction caused by UV rays, help reduce the rates of storm water runoff, reduce the heat island effect, and provide a habitat for local bird and insect species. It is important to note that most green walls are designed as lattice or trellis where the plants are allowed to grow up the facade. This installation is very different because the planting medium is actually hung off of the wall and includes irrigation. The green wall at the Aquaquest aquarium in Vancouver is a great example of a green wall done correctly
  2. James pretty much hit the nail in the head. What I will add is that as an architect, I have implemented both onto designs, and given the different types of construction - both the climbers-on-trellis, and living green walls can give you many great added benefits. (as James rightly points out) What I tend to see is that trellis Green walls (aside from being cheaper) are more flexible and more adaptable to real buildings, due to the ease of long term maintenance...they still give you the insulation and building protection you need....but perhaps don't give you the stretch of increased bio-diversity that a living green wall has. Then again if that is your goal, you can still achieve it with a nice bio-diverse green roof! Here is another good recent example of a green wall. It is claimed to be North America's largest green living wall. http://www.sutmundo.com/largest-outdoor-green-wall-north-america-unveiled/
