Can I enroll into one major, and take classes for another major?

I am considering attending the University of Washington in a year or two and I really would like to get into the Landscape Architecture program they have there. However, the admission requirements the program calls for include courses my community college does not offer, only the university offers these prerequisites. So I was wondering if I could enroll into another major, say Sociology (this is also a major I am considering), and take classes that are pre-reqs for the landscape architecture program while also taking some classes towards the Sociology major. After I completed the landscape architecture pre-reqs I would switch my major to that. Is this possible? I am going to talk to my college adviser soon but I thought it would be worth it to ask my questions on here. If anyone is KNOWLEDGEABLE in this area I would really like to know what you think. SERIOUS answers only please. Thank you. If you need more clarification, just ask.

  1. I don't think major declaration has to be done at the same time as your college application to UW (hope you get in, btw ... I'm from the Seattle area). Major declaration usually requires a separate application and is done by the end of your sophomore year. You could start taking prereqs prior to declaring your major and that should suffice, but I know you can be "undeclared" for at least the first two years of school - at least, that's how it was at my private university. :)
  2. If you are transferring from a community college you have to declare a major when you transfer or you will not graduate in 2 more years. Taking courses in a different major is called a "minor". Most university students have a "major" their main area of study and a "minor" which is a few courses in a different major to make them a well rounded person.
