What is meant by "Ornamental Gardening" in Landscape Architecture/design?
which things include? what includes? which kinds of planting too? or structures? WHY NOT MORE POPULAR? and how this along with the more "English garden" style of "ornamental gardening" would be a big hit in these "Mc Mansion" style neighborhoods..where everyone has the SAME "Business park" style of landscaping with tons of evergreens only and large bed areas with piles of mulch on top? why became popular too and when? in the UK too or just USA? what includes? which kinds of planting too? or structures? - People are not into using their outside "home" like they are indoors. We've become adamant on air conditioning, sun avoidance that the "grounds" are nothing more than a buffer between neighbors and a place for the dog to poop...especially in these McMansions. Oh they may have their outdoor kitchen for entertaining, but they don't leave the patio. The grounds become just a visible picture, not something to walk among. Time before one escaped to the garden to relax or to exercise, now we sit in front of our wide screen TV and exercise on a treadmill or at a gym, not daring to break our acrylic fingernails getting dirty and sweaty in our own gardens. (no wonder I've never had nice finger nails!) Plus landscaper maintenance is all about mowing lawns and sculpting shrubs, forget proper pruning to maximize flowering, they all want to create gumballs and spirals. A well trained horticulturist is a rarity in maintenance. Flowers mean bending over, dead heading, replanting. I had very few clients who relished outdoor color beyond the obligatory pots of flowers near the front door and on the patio. I especially miss the big floral displays in city parks. Those were indeed special places. But budget restraints and the populace that today goes in and digs up the flowers and takes them home! Even I quit putting flowers in the front of the house as they had a habit of disappearing..tulips, roses, etc
