Portfolio for architecture school?

I am interested in applying to architecture schools in Canada for the Fall of 2009. I am thinking of applying to the master's program in architecture which is open to students from all academic backgrounds. My decision to study arch. was made fairly recently. I had considered it before, but hadn't given it much thought. Currently, I am in year 3 of a Life Sciences + Bioethics degree. I was fairly encouraged abt pursuing arch. after reading program websites & learning that the schools give equal consideration to non-arch. majors. I have some arts background. I really enjoy doing it. I have worked as a caricature artist, did landscape potraits and quite a decent bit of photography. My marks are fairly decent. Now I just need a good portfolio to make myself stand out among other applicants. I have more than a year to work on puting together a good portfolio. I need some suggestions-for portfolio and just general tips for admission to arch. school. I am considering Toronto & Guelph.

  1. I'm currently a 4th year student at University of Houston. Architectural school is very demanding. You going to have to put a lot of effort into it. Your understanding of art will help you somewhat. My portfolio suggestion: 1. rendering skills, model work, photography, artwork, etc. 2. your understanding of design: a. architectural history (gothic to baroque to modern to post-modern) b. relationship with objects and it's surrounding (SUSTAINABLE DESIGN) c. Architect icon (Le Corbusier, Mies Van de Rohe, etc.)http://architect.architecture.sk/ d. seen AND experience famous works of architecture by world travel (rome, new york, paris, etc.) 3. Well CRAFTMANSHIP in every detail of your portfolio. Down to the font size, the paper type, the layout, JUST everything. You have one chance to impress, ...and it is through YOUR portfolio is how they will judge you.
